Here’s an updated method for downgrading your HBOOT 1.50 to 1.40 on your HTC Evo 3D. (older method here)
Step 1. Make sure you are on Software number 2.17.XXX.X.
Step 2. Take the battery out and in, then hold down Volume Down and Power button together for 5 seconds to get into bootloader.
Make sure your phone either says “LOCKED”, “RELOCKED” with “S-ON” and HBOOT 1.50. If not, follow
For those of you on HBOOT 1.50, you can now downgrade your HTC Evo 3D back to HBOOT 1.40. This requires that you have a Windows/Mac and a Ubuntu(linux) computer (or you can do it all in Ubuntu). You can also use Ubuntu running on VirtualBox.

For Mac, change all adb to ./adb-mac and fastboot to ./fastboot-mac. For Linux, change all adb to ./adb-linux and fastboot to ./fastboot-linux.

For those of you on HBOOT 1.50 and rooted your HTC Evo 3D using HTC Unlock method, you can either install new ROMs from fastboot or use Flash Image GUI app.
Well, there’s even a better way, using HTC DumLock app, which allows you to flash your recovery to boot without use of fastboot. This is probably the best way to flash kernels/ROM
For those of you who want to install kernel/ROMs on your rooted HTC Evo 3D with HBOOT 1.50, you would have to launch Recovery from fastboot in order to flash kernels.
Well, that requires a connection to your computer but there’s a better way to do it without your computer by using the Flash Image GUI app. This app allows you to install kernels then reboot into your Recovery to flash the ROM.
Step 1. First, download FlashImageGUI.apk and install it using a file browser app such as ES File Explorer.
For those of you who have rooted your HTC Evo 3D on HBOOT 1.50, you will need to install ROMs/kernels from fastboot. Here’s an updated video tutorial on how to install ROM from fastboot using the new TWRP recovery:

Also for HTC Evo 3D users, you can get TWRP Recovery by flashing the recovery image from fastboot.

If you are on revolutionary method, you only need to flash this once.
Just type this when in fastboot mode:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-shooter-2.0.0RC0.img
For those of you on HBOOT 1.50,
We’ve got some great news for those of you who’ve used the HTC method to root your HTC Evo 3D and you have HBOOT 1.50 with S-ON, you can actually flash a new kernel along with your ROM simply by loading ClockworkMod Recovery from fastboot, which allows you to write to the boot partition.
First, put your phone in fastboot mode by turning off “Fastboot” under Settings->Power. Then power off your phone and reboot into recovery by holding
For some reason, if you need to unroot your HTC Evo 3D back to stock, here’s how to do it if you used Revolutionary root method (won’t work if you are on HBOOT 1.50 and rooted with HTC Method!). Also, Sprint isn’t so tough about returning rooted phones, last week I returned my Evo 3D with root(HTC Method) and ROM because I kept getting error 16, got an exchange no questions asked!

*Note – This method of rooting currently doesn’t allow you to flash new kernels (so no overclocking) but you can flash new ROMs. If you haven’t done OTA update to HBOOT 1.50, please follow the method outlined here instead.
This new rooting method from HTC works on software version 2.08.651.2 and later using HTC’s unlock method. You can also do it on all platforms including Windows, Linux, and Mac.

UPDATE: No worries, you can do the OTA update now, I’ve did the OTA myself and rooted my phone again using HTC’s unlocking method, it works fine, you can read up on how to root Evo 3D using HTC method here.
HTC Evo 3D OTA update 2.08.651.2 is coming tomorrow and I just want to remind folks who have not rooted to NOT UPDATE and those who’ve rooted to NOT UPDATE.
