*Note – This method of rooting currently doesn’t allow you to flash new kernels (so no overclocking) but you can flash new ROMs. If you haven’t done OTA update to HBOOT 1.50, please follow the method outlined here instead.
This new rooting method from HTC works on software version 2.08.651.2 and later using HTC’s unlock method. You can also do it on all platforms including Windows, Linux, and Mac.
Before we begin, check the software number on your phone by going to Settings->About Phone->Software Information.
Your software number should be 2.08.651.2 or LATER. If not, go do the software update under Settings->System Updates->HTC software update and start over.
For Mac users, please replace “fastboot” with “./fastboot-mac” in the instructions below.
For Linux users, please replace “fastboot” with “./fastboot-linux” in the instructions below.
Step 1. Download rootevo3dnew.zip file and unzip to root folder of your hard disk or desktop.
Download rootevo3dnew.zip
Step 2. Put your Evo 3D in fastboot mode by first going to Settings->Power and make sure “Fast boot” is checked off.
Step 3. Turn off your phone then power up by holding down Power Button and Volume Down button.
Step 4. Hit Power again to enter Fastboot.
Step 5. Connect your Evo 3D to your computer, your phone should say “Fastboot USB”.
Step 6. For Windows, install the HTC drivers HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe in the zip file. For Linux and Mac you don’t need to install drivers.
Step 7. Open up a command prompt in Windows by typing “cmd” under Start->Search and for Linux and Mac, open up a terminal.
Step 8. Go browse into the directory where you unzipped rootevo3dnew.zip, for Windows:
cd \rootevo3dnew
or
cd Desktop\rootevo3dnew
if you unzipped to your desktop.
For Mac and Linux, likewise:
cd /rootevo3dnew
or where you unzipped the files to.
Step 9. Next type:
fastboot oem get_identifier_token
You should get a bunch of code. If you don’t, you have an older OTA, go do the software update under Settings->System Updates->HTC software update and start over.
Step 10. Now, copy everything starting with <<<< Identifier Token Start >>>> and ending with <<<<< Identifier Token End >>>>> .
*Note – In Windows, when you copy, sometimes it adds a white space to the beginning, if you get errors, try copying the token to Notepad then getting rid of spaces before pasting it to HTC’s site.
Step 11. Go to HTCDev.com and sign up as a user. Then goto Unlock Bootloader->Get Started->Begin Unlock Bootloader. Agree to the legal terms, proceed all the way to Step 10 and paste the token you just copied.
Step 12. If you get errors, try the Notepad tip above, otherwise you should be getting a file called Unlock_code.bin as an attachment in your e-mail.
Download this file off your e-mail then copy the file over to the rootevo3dnew directory.
Step 13. Next go back to your command prompt/terminal and type:
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
Step 14. Go to your phone and hit the Volume Up button and then Power button to unlock bootloader.
Step 15. If you got this far, congratulations, your Evo 3D’s bootloader has been unlocked!!!
Step 16. Your phone will reboot.
Step 17. Put your Evo 3D in fastboot mode by first going to Settings->Power and make sure “Fast boot” is checked off. (Again, yes).
Turn off your phone then power up by holding down Power Button and Volume Down button.
Hit Power again to enter Fastboot.
Step 18. Type the following to install ClockworkMod Recovery:
fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img
Step 19. Go back to your phone and choose Bootloader then hit the Power Button.
Then choose Recovery then hit the Power Button.
Step 20. When you get Revolutionary CWM blue menus, go to “mounts and storage” using your Volume buttons and hit the Power button.
Then choose “mount USB storage” and hit the Power button.
Step 21. Go to your computer and copy over su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip to your Evo 3D.
Step 22. Go back to your phone and hit Power button to get out of USB mode. Then choose “+++++Go Back+++++” and hit the Power button.
Then choose “install zip from sdcard” and hit the Power button.
Then choose “choose zip from sdcard” and hit the Power button.
Then choose su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and hit the Power button.
Choose “Yes” and hit the Power button.
Step 23. Reboot and enjoy root!
FAQ
After rooting my Evo 3D using HTC Unlock method, I still get S-ON?
It doesn’t matter, the HTC Unlock method gives you a fully unlocked bootloader, the S-ON is meaningless once you unlock as you can install recovery and ROMs.
Can you still flash custom kernels?
Yes, you can still flash custom kernels but you need to launch ClockworkMod Recovery from Fastboot. I recommend you use this method for flashing any kind of ROMs too.
Don’t want to root your phone for some reason? You can always perma-temp root it, which only gives you root until you reboot.

Then choose “choose zip from sdcard” and hit the Power button.
Then choose su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and hit the Power button.

i tired it several times and get same thing. i tried it connected to lap top as directions ay. i tried it by dropping su file to sd card and doing it unhooked from lap top. either way same result. it the file bad i see others had same issue. i have 1.5 and 2.08.651.3
I was having the exact same problem as you. What I did is: 1) power the phone off. 2) power into bootloader. 3) go back into recovery mode. 4) follow the instructions in the video, but I chose to copy and replace the previous super user file (most likely doesnt make a difference, but worked for me) 5) after that you try to install the zip su-2.3.6.3 file from the sd card as before.
Goodluck =]
Ya I had the same problem but I just restarted the phone, followed the steps again, then it worked fine. Got it rooted and have the wireless tether up and running! Thanks for the awesome walk-through!
I had this same issue…. flip the signature setting on, try to install, then flip it off and try again… try it a different times and it should finally work.
This worked for me so you should try this method, I tried around 5 times before it worked, thanks for the info.
What do you mean to flip signature?
I cant download the file that htcdev.com sent me… Its a bin file my computer wont allow me, thats where im stuck at… I need help asap

look above i have the trick to do it
I also wasn’t able to get the bootloader to “unlock”. Hell, I tried using windows and linux both to no avail.
when I put in the command- ./fastboot-linux flash unlocktoken Unlockcode.bin or the windows equivelant nothing happens.
I was unable to get results myself with a slower laptop, have to at least have usb-2.0 and I also have a dual processor, when I sent command it unlocked immed. the other way there was a long pause and a message the string was too long.

I root my phone with this method and everything was fine after 8 days my phone stared running like crazy.
the bottom screen stop working,i can’t use any app that is on the bottom and sometimes when i unlock my phone and the bottom apps opens by them self without touching them also when i surf the web any link on the bottom screen opens up without cliking it,i tough by installing a rom would fix the problem but i try 2 roms already and i still have that problem…PLEASE,ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE.
It will be virtually impossible for anyone to help you, Sprint store may or may not most likely not. If you have insurance trash the phone and replace it. You wont have root but at least you will have a better working phone or buy a used one…
@james.yes i do have insurance,do you think by rooting my phone i broke it?
I don’t know I am not as knowledgeable as most but it sounds like it. It is pretty obvious Sprint has added something to the phones to keep the unlock bootlloader
screen from coming up. Id suggest buy a rooted one from EBAY.
HELP!!! I’M GETTING THIS ERROR ON HTCDEV.COM
“Error Code: 173.
Error Reason: Check Rule Fail with exception.”
HELP PLEASE!!
MY SOFTWARE NUMBER IS: 2.17.651.5
this will not work for you i tryed on 2 phones with your softwear no lock
Damn thanks anyways I guess I got to wait until something new come out then…
these instructions says (How to Root Evo 3D! [2.08.651.2 and Later) How Late,Cause It Is Not Working On The New Softwear(2.17.651.5)
I know! It was supossed to work for all htc phones
Yeah, it’s not working for me either. I get all the way to “fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin” but no dice. I’ve tried it on both Linux and Windows 7 but no prompt to unlock your phone shows up. Even though in both cmd and the terminal it says that it has successfully copied or whatever. It just stays in hboot.
I forgot to say that I am also running 2.17.651.5 as well.
Make a video that people can understand this doesn’t help at all.
I JUST GOT A REPLACEMENT EVO 3D AND IM TRYING TO ROOT IT THE LAST ONE I HAD I ROOTED IT THE OLD METHOD SO NOT THE HTC UNLOCK AND THIS NEW ONE I GOT HAS THE 2.08.651.3 AND IM TRYING TO ROOT IT USING THE HTC UNLOCK METHOD IVE GOTTEN TO THE PART WHERE YOU TYPE IN fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin AND THE PHONE IS SUPPOSED TO ASK YOU TO UNLOCK BUT ON MY PHONE NOTHING COMES UP IT STAYS ON THE SAME SCREEN THAT SAYS FASTBOOT USB. ON CMD IT SAYS EVERYTHING WENT OKAY BUT NOTHING COMES UP ON MY PHONE. HELP PLEASE.
I have been trying to get this thing to work for the last 4+ hours. I am running an Evo 3D that is flashed to Boost Mobile with HBOOT 1.5 and version 2.08.651.2. I tried on a WinXP machine and a Win7 machine. I get held up when unlocking the bootloader. The command prompt gives me the same successful messages that are to be expected and that are shown in the video, however the phone itself never prompts to actually unlock the bootloader. It just stays on the same FASTBOOT USB screen that it was on before typing in the command with my Unlock_code.bin information. My dev account created fine, the unlock_code.bin was generated successfully and emailed to me. I copied everything over perfectly and like I said, have tried to get it to work on two different machines. It’s incredibly aggravating as I just lost my cable internet at home and really wanted to be able to use the tether so I could at least use my 3G connection for internet. I feel like I have a pretty solid grasp on all of the processes involved here, but I’m at a total loss. I even restored factory defaults and started all over again. Now I have to reconfigure and personalize the whole phone all over again, and I didn’t even get the damn thing rooted. OK, I’m gonna get in bed and watch some cartoons and think happy thoughts before I start breaking things… If anyone has any tips or new information for me it’d be much appreciated. Thanks so much.
i think we have to find another website that can help with hboot 1,5 (2.17.651.5)
i dont see any one on this fourm try to answer any quations or make a new vedio because the steps above dose not seem to work for new softwear
I have 2.08.651.2 and HBOOT 1.5, which according to the title of this walkthrough tutorial is exactly the situation this whole guide was written for. I’d actually be a little happier if I had newer versions, because at least then it would make sense that I can’t get it to work.
I dont understand why you say you cant install kernels with hboot 1.50 or flash twrp recovery. i have twrp flashed so thats the recovery on the phone now. yes you have to fastboot boot recovery to flash kernels but i still have twrp cause its a lot easier than the others.
all done but icant get recovery am going to fastboot-bootloader-recovery …theris noting fone going to startuop plsss help me
I wasn’t able to flash clockwork recovery for some reason, so i decided to flash twrp.
But my question is, I’m having trouble flashing new roms, I was able to install the first one but after that I couldn’t flash anymore. I was wondering if you could help me out with this or guide me
thanks I appreciate it

Yep, same unsolved problem that everyone else is having:
After running unlock_code.bin, the phone does nothing. No choices or options, no prompts. It just sits there.
Does NOBODY have a solution for this? It’s been going on for some time now. We’re on hboot 1.50, and the firmware number is 2.17.651.5.
Help.
