*Note – This method of rooting currently doesn’t allow you to flash new kernels (so no overclocking) but you can flash new ROMs. If you haven’t done OTA update to HBOOT 1.50, please follow the method outlined here instead.
This new rooting method from HTC works on software version 2.08.651.2 and later using HTC’s unlock method. You can also do it on all platforms including Windows, Linux, and Mac.
Before we begin, check the software number on your phone by going to Settings->About Phone->Software Information.
Your software number should be 2.08.651.2 or LATER. If not, go do the software update under Settings->System Updates->HTC software update and start over.
For Mac users, please replace “fastboot” with “./fastboot-mac” in the instructions below.
For Linux users, please replace “fastboot” with “./fastboot-linux” in the instructions below.
Step 1. Download rootevo3dnew.zip file and unzip to root folder of your hard disk or desktop.
(Don’t have unzipping program? Download and install 7Zip first.)

Step 2. Put your Evo 3D in fastboot mode by first going to Settings->Power and make sure “Fast boot” is checked off.
Step 3. Turn off your phone then power up by holding down Power Button and Volume Down button.
Step 4. Hit Power again to enter Fastboot.
Step 5. Connect your Evo 3D to your computer, your phone should say “Fastboot USB”.
Step 6. For Windows, install the HTC drivers HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe in the zip file. For Linux and Mac you don’t need to install drivers.
Step 7. Open up a command prompt in Windows by typing “cmd” under Start->Search and for Linux and Mac, open up a terminal.
Step 8. Go browse into the directory where you unzipped rootevo3dnew.zip, for Windows:
cd \rootevo3dnew
or
cd Desktop\rootevo3dnew
if you unzipped to your desktop.
For Mac and Linux, likewise:
cd /rootevo3dnew
or where you unzipped the files to.
Step 9. Next type:
fastboot oem get_identifier_token
You should get a bunch of code. If you don’t, you have an older OTA, go do the software update under Settings->System Updates->HTC software update and start over.
Step 10. Now, copy everything starting with <<<< Identifier Token Start >>>> and ending with <<<<< Identifier Token End >>>>> .
*Note – In Windows, when you copy, sometimes it adds a white space to the beginning, if you get errors, try copying the token to Notepad then getting rid of spaces before pasting it to HTC’s site.
Step 11. Go to HTCDev.com and sign up as a user. Then goto Unlock Bootloader->Get Started->Begin Unlock Bootloader. Agree to the legal terms, proceed all the way to Step 10 and paste the token you just copied.
Step 12. If you get errors, try the Notepad tip above, otherwise you should be getting a file called Unlock_code.bin as an attachment in your e-mail.
Download this file off your e-mail then copy the file over to the rootevo3dnew directory.
Step 13. Next go back to your command prompt/terminal and type:
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
Step 14. Go to your phone and hit the Volume Up button and then Power button to unlock bootloader.
Step 15. If you got this far, congratulations, your Evo 3D’s bootloader has been unlocked!!!
Step 16. Your phone will reboot.
Step 17. Put your Evo 3D in fastboot mode by first going to Settings->Power and make sure “Fast boot” is checked off. (Again, yes).
Turn off your phone then power up by holding down Power Button and Volume Down button.
Hit Power again to enter Fastboot.
Step 18. Type the following to install ClockworkMod Recovery:
fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img
Step 19. Go back to your phone and choose Bootloader then hit the Power Button.
Then choose Recovery then hit the Power Button.
Step 20. When you get Revolutionary CWM blue menus, go to “mounts and storage” using your Volume buttons and hit the Power button.
Then choose “mount USB storage” and hit the Power button.
Step 21. Go to your computer and copy over su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip to your Evo 3D.
Step 22. Go back to your phone and hit Power button to get out of USB mode. Then choose “+++++Go Back+++++” and hit the Power button.
Then choose “install zip from sdcard” and hit the Power button.
Then choose “choose zip from sdcard” and hit the Power button.
Then choose su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and hit the Power button.
Choose “Yes” and hit the Power button.
Step 23. Reboot and enjoy root!
FAQ
After rooting my Evo 3D using HTC Unlock method, I still get S-ON?
It doesn’t matter, the HTC Unlock method gives you a fully unlocked bootloader, the S-ON is meaningless once you unlock as you can install recovery and ROMs.
Can you still flash custom kernels?
Yes, you can still flash custom kernels but you need to launch ClockworkMod Recovery from Fastboot. I recommend you use this method for flashing any kind of ROMs too.
Don’t want to root your phone for some reason? You can always perma-temp root it, which only gives you root until you reboot.

Gentlemen! All of you who have been having problems installing the recovery, GREAT NEWS! You, we, all have downloaded a bad recovery. Download the recovery again and again and retry installing again and again until it goes through. That’s what I did. I downloaded a good recovery and reinstalled in using the fastboot flash recovery command and PRESTO! Someone needs to post a good recovery download because all the ones I downloaded where bad. This time you don’t need Luck! And, we all owe HTC Evo 4G Hacks a HIGH 5!
I had trouble installing recovery, finally figured it out! My phone did not like USB 3.0!! plugged into a 2.0 port and it transferred just fine!! hope that helps someone else too.
Does this process unlock NAND???
I’m stuck with Step 20, I cannot make the Revolutionary CWM blue menus appear. After selecting Recovery and hitting the power button under fastboot mode.
I keep getting boot loop after successfully unlocking the phone cant get to the recovery screen any ideas thankx for the post
i’ve got the same problem, my Evo 3D GSM just reboots and doesn’t show the Revolutionary CWM
can anyone help??
This wont work i guess! is there any other way to root it. i also dont get the revollutionary cwm blue menu !
download GSMEvo3d Root instead of rootevo3dnew and use cwm-4.0.1.4-shooteru for flash booting
and also use cwm zip file from this folder. worked for me
I’m trying to unlock my bootloader following the HTC instuctions but get this error (i’ve verified my unlock token string was put into HTCs website properly and that i had flashed the latest RUU). Any ideas?
C:\RootFiles>fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
sending ‘unlocktoken’ (0 KB)…
OKAY [ 0.151s]
writing ‘unlocktoken’…
FAILED (remote: unlock token check failed)
finished. total time: 0.158s
This is all cool stuff, i haven’t seen a root method on this website for EVO DESIGN 4G .. Thats a very touch cookie, do you have any solutions for that device. I have tried everything till recovery and failed.
Hey, my EVO is the virgin mobile version. I got through all of the steps described here, but when I got to step 22, I got the following error:
Mounting SYSTEM…
Deleting SYSTEM:bin/su…
Extracting files to SYSTEM…
Setting SYSTEM:bin/su permissions to 6755…
Creating SYSTEM:xbin/su symbolic link…
E:Error in /sdcard/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
(status 0)
Installation aborted.
I’m having the exact same issue. I’ve followed the guide step by step and I can’t get the su.zip to install. I rebooted and checked if I have root, and it says that I don’t have root. What’s going on?
The instructions don’t mention that this will wipe out your phone/profile/apps. But in the video, it seems like it does. However in the very beginning of the video, I noticed you mentioned that you are rooting after having just unrooted. So the question is: does this method wipe out your phone? Or was that just a function of your phone’s previous state? (Currently HBOOT 1.58) Thanks!
for all who dont see cwm screen: cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img file in rootevo3dnew.zip is not working , i have used cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img from GSMEvo3DRoot.zip and it worked!
i follow yours and the Revolutionary CWM blue menus appear….great !!

Step 1. Download rootevo3dnew.zip file — where is the link please?
I have a windows 8 and it does not let me go past step 6. I know how to do the rest. I just got this laptop and so I need help. Please help.
when will hboot 1.58 be root-able? and a one click method?
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin step 18 on cmd screen “successfully” nothing happens on phone…
hboot 1.58
software – 2.95.651.5 710RD
any ideas?
Thanks
Have you figured out how to unlock 1.58? I have tried everything on XDA and from this site and nothing. Plus this new OTA broke swype and the phone randomly click on apps and does weird stuff.
hey your video is the best thanks but one question i have the HTC EVO V 4G its basically the the HTC EVO 3D i want to know if your instructions will work.
hello fellas,
For all the people who are having problem executing “cwm-4.0.1.4-shooteru” you need to first make sure that you have downloaded “rootevo3dnew.zip” and not just “rootevo3d.zip” the difference is that the word “new” which makes a lot of difference. Any who please i see some of you are having problem with locating the “rootevo3dnew.zip” please go to 1) Step 1 and look between the “Sponsored Links” which is under the Step 1, people look at the bottom text “Sponsored Links” which is right above the flash adbanner and you will see that it says ‘rootevo3dnew.zip’ its a little confusing, because it looks like it is a sponsored add but it is the link to download the root file. Hope this helped a lot of you.
I do have a question?
I am stuck on the the last step I am unable to execute “su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip” from my phone and is keep failing and without it I will not have a root access if some one recently resolved this problem or know the solution people email me at dr.doncoper@gmail.com or replay here.
Thank you
Followed the guide worked fine. But I installed titanium backup and it’s giving me an error message any help would be great.
I successfully rooted my 3D but after about half the day all my apps started telling me i didnt have root access like the phone un-rooted itself somehow? any suggestions?
