How to Install Custom ROM on Rooted HTC Evo 4G LTE!

Want to install a custom ROM on your rooted HTC Evo 4G LTE?

It’s pretty simple to do.  First, you will need an unlocked bootloader and TWRP Recovery installed.

Step 1. Download the custom ROM you want to install, usually a “zip” file.  Don’t unzip the file and copy the whole file over to your Evo 4G LTE.  You can also download ROMs straight to your phone but I don’t really recommend it as downloads can get corrupt when downloading on your phone plus downloads really slow.  If you can, try downloading on your computer then copy over to your phone.

In this example, I am installing freEVO LTE ROM, which has just one zip file.  If there’s multiple zip files, copy all of them over to your phone.

Step 2. Once ROM zip files are on your phone, reboot into bootloader by holding down Volume Down and Power buttons together for 10 seconds.  Let go of your Power button for 1 second and hold it down again.

Step 3. Choose “RECOVERY” and hit the Power button.

Step 4. Once in TWRP recovery, choose “Wipe”.

Step 5. Choose “Factory Reset”.

Step 6. Swipe to wipe, this will erase all your personal settings and apps so make a backup before doing this!

Step 7. Next, go back to main menu and choose “Install”.

Step 8. Browse your filesystem and find the ROM zip file you copied over earlier and install it.   If there are multiple files, you need to install the main ROM file (the largest) then the rest by repeating Step 7 and 8.

Step 9. Once done installing ROM zip file(s), choose “Wipe cache/dalvik” and swipe.

Step 10. Reboot and you should find yourself with the new custom ROM running, enjoy!

Certain ROMs like CM10 might require you to use CWM recovery instead of TWRP recovery. You are on your own until I try this myself but I will see if I can try installing that ROM soon.

I have the HTC EVO 4G LTE and have downloaded the latest Rom (fresh evo Lte 5.1) to my windows computer then copied it over to my phone (using the phone as a disc drive) from my computer. It copies to the phone and when I check the directory on the phone it shows as a zip file in the download directory. Per your instructionsm, I did not open the zip file prior to copying it to my phone. Went through the steps above but when I open TWRP I am not able to find the zip file in the download file. I tried copying the zip file to media and other directories but when I repeated the procedure TWRP did not show the file in either location. What am I doing wrong? Thanks so much!

Hmmm.. not sure, it should be there, I think you are doing something wrong, double-check and try it again slowly, you should see it!

        1) Keep repeating and following directions per above, but am not able to find the zip file when I look for it in the TWRP. I am looking under the sd/download file but it is not there. I reboot under factory settings then I hook my phone to my computer and the zip file shows up in the download file. Are there some settings on the TWRP that would allow me to see the zip file? I am really frustrated, Thanks so much!

Are you sure you are using the correct menus in TWRP? Just try again slowly, you should find the zip files.

  4. NHibernate says:

I had the same issue with finding the file after I copied on the phone, for some reason it was in the sdcard 2 folder.

  5. Andrew says:

I even disabled fast boot under power settings. Thank good I backed up everything. I tried 3 times already.

  6. justin says:

After I got everything set up for some reason some apps tell me my sd card is not mounted. I checked and double checked, unmounted and mounted again and still nothing. Any idea what the problem is?

My question is will I loose my phone services 3g, text, picture messaging if I flash another rom? Even when I hit wipe data and factory reset in twrp? I haven’t flashed a rom on a phone before, had a person help me with flashing. I only have experience flashing recoveries and roms with wifi only devices. Can someone please let me know if it’s safe to just install the zip?
