How to get FREE Wifi Tether Mobile Hotspot on your HTC Evo 4G!
For those of you who want to get FREE 3G/4G wifi tethering on your HTC Evo 4G, there’s an app called Android Wifi Tether you can install.
The only requirement is that you must root your HTC Evo 4G first. (You can read my full step-by-step instructions on how to root your HTC Evo 4G.)
Once you’ve rooted your phone, simply browse your HTC Evo 4G’s browser to Android Wifi Tether download page. (Or just do a search on Google for “Android Wifi Tether”)
Make sure to download the latest version wireless_tether_2_0_2-pre14.apk or better otherwise the free wifi 3G/4G tether won’t work!
Download the file like I am doing here:
Then open it with Package Installer like this:
Install the Wifi Tether app.
Open the app and start tethering for free on Sprint’s 3G or 4G network.
You can press “menu” to change your SSID, 128-bit WEP key, and also to restrict connections via MAC address.
Also, when a device connects, your HTC Evo 4G should “buzz” indicating a device connected.
I think at this point, Sprint needs to offer the HTC Evo 4G Mobile Hotspot for free instead of charging extra $30/month as users will eventually get around hacking it.
Well, this is good news anyways, enjoy now and don’t forget to subscribe to our blog for more cool HTC Evo 4G Hacks and tutorials!

You just need to go into your settings from the home screen. Now go into applications and in there there is a check box which allows dowloads from non market sources. Check that and your golden. L8tr

First of all I would like to say your site is awesome! I can’t wait to see it expand! You should have videos for a lot of cool homebrew products like emulators and such. Anyways, my question is will Sprint ever find out about this? Is this illegal? Bypassing 30 dollars a month is a big deal isn’t it?

I don’t think it’s illegal because Sprint is only making you pay $30/month extra to use “their” mobile hotspot, no one said you couldn’t use another app for that.
Besides, consumers shouldn’t have to pay TWICE for the same internet. I hope Sprint changes their policies on this like Verizon did offer free wifi tethering on their Palm Pres, I rather pay extra for my overall internet then pay extra.

You IDIOT, Verizon isn’t giving the access to the Mobile Hot-Spot to subscribers for FREE it is added into the rate plan somewhere, have you taken the plans from Sprint and Verizon side-by-side recently? Verizons plans clearly are far more expensive than Sprint. In-Fact for me to get the same plan I am currently using on my EVO on a family plan with 2 lines (the second line also being an EVO) with 1500 Shared Anytime minutes , Unlimited Data, nights and weekends starting at 7:00pm, Any Mobile Anytime Minutes, Unlimited Texts and Picture Messaging, All the e-mail accounts (whether personal or corporate) I can ever want to add, AND an additional $10 monthly charge per line for 4G Premium Data service and I pay only $169.99!!! if I wanted to pay for Mobile Hot-Spot (though I would NEVER pay for something like that on an Android device as long as I have access to Google.com) I would pay an additional $29.99 per line and STILL be paying less than I would pay with Verizon by $16.00 a month! Not to mention , if I wasn’t already a subscriber to Verizon wireless service, the initial deposit amount required is usually outrageous when Sprints average required deposit for consumers with fair credit ratings is $100.00 per line of service. Feel free to go to the websites and build the packages on your own! You will see that Sprint is the better deal no matter how you look at it! Do your research before saying things like that on a website and making yourself look like the IDIOT you are.

Your phone may be rooted but without the rooted rom installed you aren’t NAND unlocked yet. You will be able to tell when you hboot, select recovery. If you get taken and can do a nandroid backup or restore your good. When you run each app the first time, it will have a ninja and the app will ask for superuser access. L8r

I had the same problem and the cure was updating my radio+wimax versions. If your hand unlocked and get the 1.47.651.1 versions ut will start working again. I found a post that has two steps. You end up with amon ra recovery and fully hand unlocked, as well as it updating your phone to the same level as the june ota update.

Now that I rooted my phone and got free wifi tethering it all works great EXCEPT for one MAJOR problem, my phone WON’T RING!!!!!!!!! Nothing I do seems to make it ring, ringer is full blast, I change ring tones and that don’t work, it won’t even vibrate…. .WTF????
Anybody?

the new tether works great
the only problem i’m having is that i also use a ARAVE unit which connects my cell phone to the internet for a better phone signal. when i tested the tether the signal on my phone went from 5 bars to 1. That is the signal strength that i get when i don’t use the ARAVE unit. It seems that the tether is killing the connection to my ARAVE unit. Do you have any thoughts on that?

ok so i rooted my phone and not now only did it reset it to factory defaults and erase everything the tethering doesn’t work. now that ive spent hours reinstallIng everything and putting my e-mail acct back on i CANT GET ANY MAIL NONE OF MY ACCT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING. YOU GOT A FIX FOR THIS. No where do you say you have to install your custom rom as well to get it to work and you should let ppl know this up front that erases everything and that you need to install both.

Wow you guys are retards. This is why Sprint makes you pay 30/ m. It’s easier than running into problems while trying to hack your phone. Plus, 4g runs on a different network than 3g. So this app will prove invaluable once 4g rolls completely around. Can this app even tether a 4g connection?

No need for the name-calling. And if you were better informed, you would realize that as long as you take your time, do your homework & not skip over crucial instructions in haste, the benefits of using tested/verified hacks outweigh the willful ignorance & complacency of mainstream consumerism. It’s a matter of choosing your battles wisely.
