How to Install Custom Boot Animations on Rooted HTC Evo 4G and HTC Evo 3D!

For those of you who want to install custom boot animations (I’ve been getting asked a lot), you can easily do it by copying over your desired custom bootanimation.zip file to the /system/media directory using ES File Explorer app.

You can download free boot animations here at AndroidBootAnimation.com.

Most custom kernels/ROMs will support this (such as CM7.1) while some will not.  You will of course need your Evo 4G or Evo 3D rooted with a custom ROM a custom ROM that supports it.  (You can always try on your phone to find out if your ROM/kernel setup supports it, can’t hurt.)

So please try it out and let me know if it worked for your ROM or not. (leave your ROM/kernel setup below in comments box.)

If it’s not working, I can compile a kernel (next week) to make it work for your ROM but let me know which ROM so I can test it before releasing it out in the wild.

  1. Dave Passons says:

the ES File Explorer will copy frm SD Card,, but will not paste to local/system/media…. Says “failed” everytime.

    • Dustin says:

Press Menu then go to settings, scroll down until you see Root Settings. Make sure Root Explorer & Mount File System have check marks next to them then it will work.

Your phone must be rooted though

  2. Dustin says:

I have used many roms that are shown here on htcevohacks.com and I have recently went back to the Stock Rooted Rom Software # 4.53.651.1 which we all know gives us the best battery life which is what I need being on the road all the time.

Anyway, I was able to go in to es file explorer and delete the Stock boot animation file that was found in phone>system>customize>resource. There you will find the stock spc_bootanimation as well as the sound folder which is labeled spc as well. From there you would think that you could just copy/paste the bootanimation of your choice that you downloaded and it would work. WRONG! In order to change the stock boot animation on a stock rooted evo you need to do the following:
press the star>phone>system>media>menu button>operations>paste then reboot.

You will have a stock rooted evo 4g with a custom boot animation!

Thanks MAX for all your hard work with these roms and extras. Love the site

    • Silentcontender says:

Oh man THANKS a ton, I wasn’t sure it was possible or I thought it might take more tinkering then I was willing to risk. Its easy though, now I can have any boot animation I want! I wasn’t sure what to do with the stock ones so I just put them in a holding folder on my sdcard until I am ready to switch it back. Thanks again!

    • Orlando - MWaV says:

Dustin which one did you use to get yours working. Stilll fowllowing the same steps and nothing working or working its normal bootup screen

    • Edmond Dontez says:

      Awesome thanks man!

  3. JG says:

Hey Max, I was just wondering if you could tell me where to place the boot animation at for virus’ eternity 1.4 rom on E3D? its not in system/media.. so it didnt work but i cant figure out where to place it and i dont wanna break anything.. Thanks a bunch if ur able to do this.

    • Dustin says:

Did you try phone>system>customize>resource? It could be in that folder also like it is in stock rom. The new boot animation needs to be saved in phone>system>media. Copying over the one in resource will do nothing

      • JG says:

Thanks alot Dustin, that was where it was and it worked, I appreciate it.

        • Dustin says:

No problem… Glad I could assist

          • Ryan says:

Hey I have stock ROM and I followed your steps deleted stock bootanimation(system/customize/resource
            copied new bootanimation star/phone/system/media/operations/paste/reboot
            It worked 1 time only
but when i tried to change to a diff bootanimation it went to the default boot, so i switched back to the one that worked and now that one isnt working either…\

am i missing something, do u need to do something special each time u change?

            HELP!!!

  5. ernest taylor says:

i tried two seperate custom boot animations just like your youtube video and it didnt work either time. my evo 4g is rooted but is it not working because i still have the stock rom installed?

    • Dustin says:

I posted a comment above yours if you look through it. I have rooted stock rom also. Read through my post which I will copy and past below and you will see how to do it. I detailed it so its easy to do on a stock rom. Read Below

ok i just tried this again. i deleted the stock boot animation file and the spc_bootanimation. i copied over my custom boot file to the phone>system>meda folder. did not work. i also tried putting it in the folder where the stock animation file originally was. still didnt work. i downloaded another custom boot animation file and did the same thing. each time i get the “android” screening meaning its no boot animation. whats my issue? the guy said in his comment below he had to rename his boot animantion to the stock name. do i need to do this

  6. ovar says:

Works like a charm on Evo 3D!!….Running Infected Eternity ROM with BcBlend kernel. I downloaded several of them and keep them on sd card so when i get tired of one i just cut and paste over to phone/system/resource/customize and done. This page rocks!!!!!!!

    • Senior says:

I have the 3d and it is not working at all for me. I have the viper rom. what rom or kernel do you need to have in order to get this to work.

      • Senior says:

I just downloaded the infected eternity rom and still nothing is working.

        • ovar says:

Using File Explorer app make sure Root Explorer & Mount File System have check marks next to them. Navigate to phone/system/resource/customize and you will find a icon called bootanimation.zip you can delete this file if you want or move it to another folder……[Make sure that it is moved to a folder other than the one you have downloaded your new bootanimation as this will change the zip name and will not work. I just deleted mine altogether, it will not hurt your phone. if no booanimation is found, a default android logo appears instead of the bootanimation when starting your evo 3d]……. Place your new downloaded bootanimation.zip file in the customize folder, reboot and enjoy!

  7. Jacob Carmona says:

Do I have to delete the current boot animation zip files in the system/media section first before copying the desired zip file? I’m running MikG 2.55 and tried it without deleting anything just pasting the zip file and nothing happens. Still boots old animation.

    • Jacob Carmona says:

Never mind I figured it out so ill share in case anyone else has same issue.

I’m running mikG v2.55 and boot animations are found in phone/data/local and the boot animation zip files are called hTC_bootanimation.zip. replace this file with the desired boot animation zip file and make sure you rename it exactly as the original zip file. hTC_bootanimation.zip.

Restart and you should have a new working boot animation.

      • WhitneyDigital says:

        Thanks a mill!!! That worked.
This is my first time rooting a phone and it worked great thanks to you guys. Im running MikG 2.59 on my EVO 4g and LOVING IT! now i can make my sniper scene bootanimation!

      • Bo says:

Works great!! If you follow the instructions provided in the video and copy your custom animation zip file to the system\media directory and delete all stock animation zip file in the system>customize>resource directory then everything should work fine. By default you phone will look in system>customize>resource directory for any animation zip file. It MUST deleted before it will recognize any customized animation zip file in the system\media directory. Good Luck!!
