Over on HTCEvo.net (our other HTC Evo 4G blog, yes we love our HTC Evo 4G!), I posted a video tutorial on how to take great macro photos and videos on your HTC Evo 4G using its manual focus. Sorta like a DSLR (but easier because you have touch controls), you can easily focus on subjects very close to you. In fact, in my test, I was able to do macro recording up to within about 2.5 inches. That is pretty amazing that you can do this on a smartphone. I don’t even think iPhone 4 can do this as it doesn’t have a manual focus like the Evo 4G.
Anyways, I was messing with it and this is probably one of the best features on the HTC Evo 4G.
For like the 3 weeks I’ve had my HTC Evo 4G, I didn’t know how to “properly” take macro photos and videos because I didn’t use the on-board touchscreen manual focus.
Many of you might have been doing just the same thing to take photos/videos and losing out on the “best” feature about the HTC Evo 4G.
Whether your subject of focus is on the upper-right corner or lower-left corner, you can easily set the focus manually by pressing on where you want the camera to focus.
In doing this, I was able to taking some really amazing videos, check out this one of my Ed Hardy Lighter, and that’s all without a macro lens!

i believe apple has an autofocus which can be manually adjusted by touching wherever on screen. have you ever played with one or owned one?
Yes, I have played with my friends, no manual focus on iphone 4, auto only.
That’s stupid. You can’t make macro photos on evo!!! The auto focus only works at the certain distance. If its little too close it won’t focus… try to take a picture of the flower upclose it won’t work. You can’t make a vid even if its a little dark. AND THERE IS NO MANUAL FOCUS!!!! By you pushing on the screen to focus don’t mean its manual focus.. I had my evo the first day it came out and I do not like the camera at all… way too many problems.
Ok man, you lost 100% credibility when you said “you can hear it focusing”, um no you cannot, what you are hearing is a sound file playing, turn your sound off on the camera and you not only get faster response time on your pictures, but you will also see that there is no “focusing” or “shutter” sound when a picture is taken.
You own a 7D and you don’t know what Bokeh is, or pull focus or any of the other industry standard terms. You sir, need to learn before you try to teach.
This guy does not know what he is talking about. I have an evo and I do like the quality of pictures and video it takes. I also own a DSLR and I actually know how to use it unlike this guy. First none of that was macro photography. And that is for sure not manual focus, all that is doing is allowing you to pick a point for the auto focus to focus on. As far as depth of field ever single camera lens has a certain depth of field at given F stop. yes even your cheap point and shoots, this is not ground breaking for the evo. even the old crappy camera phones had the ability to through a background out of focus. With all that said it is a very cool feature that you can pick focus points.
Im trying to us my HDMI cord from my EVo to Home TV playing Youtube on it and its not working. Do i need to Root my EVo for this to work instead of playing recorded videos ?
You apparently have no idea what the phrase “manual focus” is. Manual focus means that you actually turn a dial or or some other scale and can change the focus along a continuum. What you are doing is using the Evo’s auto-focus feature, which allows you to choose any focal point to AUTOMATICALLY focus on. The problem with this is that the auto-focus is not very accurate and doesn’t always manage to focus on what you want as your focal point, especially if it does not have a lot of detailed features.
Also, is it really necessary to call the phone the “HTC Evo 4G”? If you call it anything other than the Evo you are sounding quite pretentious.
