For those of you who want to get S-OFF on your HTC Evo 3D (Sprint CDMA and GSM compatible), now there’s an easier way to do it using a piece of wire and Juopunutbear S-Off software, which works on Windows or Linux. Yes, you will need to borrow your friend’s Windows or Linux laptop if you only have a Mac. But trust me, this method is very easy to do, anyone can do it easily with bare minimum computer skills. Before we begin though, we highly suggest you give yourself an hour for this project so you can do it correctly without rushing yourself.

Why do you need S-OFF? For GSM Evo 3D users, I don’t really recommend S-OFF as you can already use 4EXT Recovery to flash ROMs and kernels flawlessly. But for Sprint CDMA Evo 3D users, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting S-OFF as newer ICS ROMs will not flash correctly without S-OFF. Plus, it makes your life a ton easier to install/flash new ROMs on you Sprint Evo 3D, so go ahead and take an hour of your time during the week to get this done, your phone will thank you for it.

UPDATE WARNING: It seems like this method may erase your microSD card (while you do the wire trick) for some reason, please make sure to make a BACKUP of your microSD card before just in case.

Step 1. You will need to have your phone unlocked, rooted, and on a stock ROM.   If you are not on a custom ROM and you did not make a backup of your stock ROM, please use this unroot guide to unroot back to software version 2.17 (then you have to re-unlock your bootloader and root it again).

Once you are ready to go, make sure USB Debugging is checked ON under Settings->Applications->Development.

Step 2. Next connect a micro-USB cable from your Evo 3D to your computer and make sure the connection type is set to “Charge only”.

Step 3. You will need a piece of wire to do the wire trick.  I just pulled a small piece of wire from my Ethernet cables but you can use any kind of wire.

Step 4. Make sure you have drivers installed for Windows.  You should see something like “My HTC” or “ADB Interface” of some sort in your Device Manager.  If you don’t, install the drivers below:

Download Drivers for 32-bit Windows

Download Drivers for 64-bit Windows

Step 5. Download the appropriate ControlBear for your operating system and unzip the files.  For Windows, run the ControlBear.exe file by doing a right-click on the file and choosing “Run as administrator”.

Download Control Bear:

Step 6. Watch your Evo 3D’s screen carefully as the program runs and make sure to allow any Superuser requests that pop up like shown below:

Step 7. If you get “Is information correct”, hit “y”.  If you miss, just run the program again.

Step 8. After the program runs for few minutes, it will eventually tell you to “Do wire-trick now!”.  If you get to this point, you are almost done.

Step 9. The wire trick is probably the hardest part for this S-Off trick but you can do it.

There’s two holes on the top-left of the Evo 3D’s back.  Use the outer hole and also the metal point on the microSD card.

First, just tap your microSD card metal plate once.  Then count about 2 seconds then hold down the wire on the microSD card metal plate until your phone reboots.

Step 10. If you did the wire trick correctly, your phone will eventually reboot and get S-OFF.

When asked to install Juopunutbear HBOOT, say “yes”.

Step 11. When everything is done, you can reboot into bootloader and find yourself with S-OFF.

Q&A

Q: Don’t I need S-OFF HBOOT 1.40?
A: No, you just need S-OFF, the version of HBOOT doesn’t really matter.  So long as you have S-OFF, you will be able to easily flash new custom ROMs/kernels without the usual headaches. If you are having trouble flashing new ROMs, use fastboot method to install ROMs. After that you can use 4EXT Recovery to install new ROMs (unless you have it already).

  1. Anthony says:

this is great, i did this wire trick and all my ics install problems have vanished. i was having issues with wifi, camera not working in 3d, gapps and sd mounting. i was also having to flash the antrax file to get rid of boot loop. now first install of mikvirgin went smooth, all works. thanks a lot for this s off fix tutorial zedo! u r the fn man!

  2. Ivan Prskalo says:

I think this is incopatible with Europena (GSM) version of HTC EVO 3d…
because of different alignment of hardware components…

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

You can use the files for gsm evo instead its up there.

      • Ivan Prskalo says:

No, dude, I meant, on GSM EVO 3D there where is microSD card slot – we have SIM card slot, and under that slot it is microSD card hole, which is insertable even when phone is ON, because it comes from the left and under that SIM slot…

  3. Yama says:

I bought htc EVO 3D by (au by KDDI) in Japan. By any chance does anyone know which method is the best to S-off?

    • jesus says:

This is by far the easiest!!.. downgrading your hboot.. is alot of steps this was easy .. if you have a ps2 or ps1 cut off the av able or any av cables that you dont need cut it off.. and then just cut the plastic like in the video … so the wire is out and you can do it.. its so simple got it the first time… keep up the work zedomax!!!!!!!

  4. GRIMmEvO says:

WORKED ON MY FIRST ATTEMPT AND I WAS ON THE ZR3D 4.1 GT ROM WHICH IS A 217 ROM. ICS HERE I COME. THIS SITE AND MAXX YOUR THE BEST AND I’M A SUBSCRIBER. THANK YOU!!!

  5. Boozey says:

What happens if you’re not using a stock ROM?

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

Try unrooting first to a stock ROM, you can make a backup of your ROM beforehand if you want to restore it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmRjXIcJaa0

      • Boozey says:

Must i flash a stock ROM after unlocking to gain full rot access?

        • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

After getting soff u can flash custom recovery then install new rom or restore rom.

          • Boozey says:

Well before i try the wire trick I have to have superuser and busy box access. But when i relock and unlock my phone using the RUU and HTC unlock method, my phone still isn’t rooted according to the “root checker” app. But it does say it’s rooted after i flash any ROM. So is there a way that i’m missing to get access to root after i unlock? or do i have to flash a Stock ROM before proceeding to “the wire”?

            • Boozey says:

I’m sorry, but i guess my question, is how do you get superuser access after unlocking the phone?

              • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

re-root or you can install custom ROM, all custom ROMs come with root.

                • Boozey says:

This is my fifth attempt to obtain an ICS ROM and all I’ve managed to do was get my phone stuck in “Juopunutbear” mode, and I seem to have lost all the information on my 32gb SD card while doing the wire trick (so i’ve lost all my back ups) 🙁 Well i guess I deserve that. I’m going to attempt to restore my phone tonight and hopefully have better luck obtaining S-Off next week. 🙂 Thanks for the help Zedomax, I’ll continue visiting your site as it’s my only source of hope.

      • Aysah says:

This video doesnt work…:( oh dear.

  6. Dan says:

I’m using Windows Xp, which zip file should I download. There are several rooting files couldn’t find the control bear software in the newevo3droot files.

  7. eagleboy says:

why is my phone keep rebooting and also saying (1/45)** daemon still not runningerror: cannot connect to daemon
‘tmp\fastboot.exe’ is not recognized as an internal or external command
    operable program or batch file.

  8. How do i get the cable out of my ethernet cable? or any other cable?

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

Any wire will do. Doesn’t have to be Ethernet

    • Boozey says:

Cut open the ethernet cable using a wire cutter, then cut out one of the individual wires, ther should be 4. Then take a pair of pliers, or any other sharp material to expose the wire on both ends.

  9. MNUKY says:

@ Zedomax,I did the night before you posted the video, but I just wanna thank you for listening to our request to make video about this wire trick method. As usual this is going to help a lot of your followers. So high on Android.

  10. GRIMmEvO says:

I took a chance on not going to a the original stocked rom so don’t do what i did and stayed on the zr3d rom. I was just so frustrated about the boot looping and errors w/S-on. Now i dont have that problem anymore. What i used was a piece of wire from a computer power supply i had laying around. I cut a piece of the yellow wire. Cut off insulation on both ends and twisted the one end that was going in the hole. Put one end in the hole first than tap then hold when on plate covering memory card. HIGH ON ANDROID!!

  11. waide cummins says:

ok tried the wire trick and now im stuck in the juopunutbear screen and dnt knw how to get bck it made a recovery and boot image but not sure how to get it to my phone

  12. GRIMmEvO says:

Use a pair of good sharp scissors to take insulation off both ends w/o cutting. On the sofware side i think maxx said keep trying Run the program again.

  13. jorge says:

i cant download controlbear.exe says the file doesnt exist how can download it?

  14. jay says:

http://unlimited.io/ <—– thats where u can download control bear and thats max worked great

  15. ramjet73 says:

Since you have to be HTC unlocked to use this method, that probably means you are also rooted with a custom recovery flashed. If that’s the case, you can download and flash one of the stock rooted ROM’s from and save the time and trouble of going through the unroot/reroot procedure. I recommend the 2.17 odexed version since that’s the closest to the current stock ROM.

  16. Fxdfireman says:

Thatswhat I had to do. reload the recover and put filers Rom on through fastboot recovery.

  17. GRIMmEvO says:

I didn’t get any boot loops i was lucky i guess. Keep trying you’ll get it done.

  18. waide cummins says:

Boot into fastboot connect to computer and reflash recovery and then u can reflash ur rom

    • Jimmy Kirby says:

I’ve done this many times and It appears to flash the roms but will never boot them up afterwards. Look like I stuck in boot loop forever. Same thing happens when I run my recovery. End with” recovery complete” but wont boot.

  19. Jimmy Kirby says:

OK I have it after 14 hours. I extracted the boot.img from the last rom I flashed ( Mikvirgin ) , put it in the fastboot thing then cmd prompt then fastboot flash boot boot.img enter . Worked this time probably because it was the correct boot.img .then rebooted . done . no more boot loop.

  20. andrew says:

zedo i have evo 3d on sprint i just relocked my phone and was wanting to get s-off using the wire trick ,but have to unlock bootloader and reroot what is the best method to do this. thanks for all ur work and videos ur the man!

  21. Randy says:

Um. After performing the wire trick, it rebooted my phone then said S-OFF failed. It was stuck on the JupunutBear screen so I removed the battery and restarted the phone and now it’s still stuck at the JuopunutBear screeeen. Help please.

  22. andrew says:

does anyone know the trick to get off the juopunutbear screen tried pulling out the battery not sure what else to do

    • Randy says:

You just have to keep trying now. Leave it on that screen, plug it back in to the USB, then run the program again to keep trying. It’s all about getting the timing right on the wire trick.

      • andrew says:

i finally got it took me about 5-6 times but now the phone says sd card is blank or has unsupported filesystem. anyone have any ideas. when i put it in the sd adaptor computer says sd card needs formating. if i format is there anything that i will lose thats vital to what i have done to the phone. thanks for the help Randy

        • ramjet73 says:

Go ahead and format the card on your PC and restore the backup you made per the prerequisites on the website. There is nothing on the SD card that’s needed after the wire trick is complete, but the SD card sometimes get corrupted by the process.

          • Randy says:

Yeah, didn’t realize it wiped the SD card, but all 16GB were wiped and corrupted. A small price to pay for my lack of detail to instructions and to have S-OFF. I couldn’t format on the phone, nor via recovery so I put it in an micro SD to SD adapter and used Windows to format it. Works fine now.

  23. gus says:

any help on the last post????? i rushed into this myself forgetting to switch my sd card and not typing y when prompted, now my evo is stuck on the screen for the wire rick. no recovery for some reason either. help?

    • Randy says:

Just keep trying! It took me 11 times to get the 1.75 seconds in between the first and second taps right. I also forgot to press Y, but I’m back up and running now.

      • gus says:

i finally got it after re unrooting and re rooting my phone getting su working and finding out my mem card got wiped. 🙁 but oh well i got s off the first time i did this and cant be happier with hboot 1.5 and s off

  24. Randy says:

BTW, for those of you trying to get S-OFF because you want the the new ICS RUU, don’t bother with it. It doesn’t work. Seems like everyone is getting the following error:

“Error 131: Customer ID Error. This ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android Phone. Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again.”

At least we S-OFF now though, for when the real OTA update comes. Whenever that is…. =\

    • ramjet73 says:

Why would be running an RUU from Windows if you have S-OFF? You can flash any of the ROM’s based on the Virgin Mobile leak from a custom recovery and they work fine.

      • Randy says:

I’ve been hearing nothing but complaints on the flashable ICS ROMS. I figured the RUU would be safer?

        • ramjet73 says:

Good thing you couldn’t flash the RUU.exe. It would have installed the Virgin Mobile firmware which you definitely don’t want.

  25. Randy says:

Ok guys, please be sure to replace your current microSD with one you don’t mind ruining forver. I just reformatted my 16GB (fat32) and my phone isn’t recognizing it. Although it will ldt me take pictures, none of the music is beinf picked up. I hope It’s nof the phone itself that got messed up. I’ll have to try another card tomorrow. =\

    • ramjet73 says:

Did you follow the directions for reformatting the SD card in the troubleshooting section of the unlimited.io website? I did the wire trick on two phones and the SD card got corrupted on one but reformatted fine using the SD reader on a notebook, but if that didn’t work for you try the commands on the website.

      • Jimmy Kirby says:

The commands on that website are so vague. I have no idea what they are describing. Can you elaborate ? my 32gb sandisk is toast.

  26. Jimmy Kirby says:

I tried two more times and again failed to flash a stock rom and be able to boot it up. Phone says relocked but I read somewhere else that it may not be fully relocked useing the fastboot command. I tried several downloaded RUU’s ( flashes like normal but only bootloops afterward ) and tried PG86IMG.zip method with several downloaded zips ( these allways end with incorrect CID ). Any Suggestions ?

  27. Jimmy Kirby says:

I think my problem is that I’ve allready flashed an ICS rom and its much more involved and risky getting back to gingerbread. So there is no available RUU yet for me.

  36. Mike Black says:

My phone is stuck in bootloop, how do i fix that?

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Randy says:

Do you mean after you did the wire trick and sucesssfully got s-off? Or do you still have the command prompt open? If so, that happened to me and while constant rebooting is normal, after the 21st time I thought that something was wrong so I just took the battery out and tried the wire trick again.

  37. Mike Black says:

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Richard A. says:

Try opening cmd tipe cd \rootevo3dnew pres enter and then tipe fastboot flash boot boot.img just like if you were rooting your phone i hope u did not lose that fiile but if u did serch for it in htc evo hacks on top.

    • Justin says:

Assuming you are hboot 1.5, starting over should be as easy as…

      Search on XDA for: RUU_Shooter_S_Sprint_WWE_2.17.651.5_Radio_1.06.00.1216_NV_NV_spcs_1.42_release_233304_signed.exe

Relock via Fastboot first: fastboot oem lock

  38. Ark.Bishop says:

Help!!! I have followed the directions to the letter. The phone rebooted after doing the wire trick but it is stuck on the “JuopunutBear” screen and will not get past it. I have tried rebooting and running it the file as administrator but I am getting the following message:

    Starting Up…….
    Connecting to device……
    Searching device….
    ADB server didn’t ACK
    * failed to start Daemon *
    error:
    Connect device and install drivers
    Press enter to EXIT…

Mind you I got this message after getting all the messages to do the wire trick now, so I am not sure why iit is now asking to install drivers. Can somebody give me a hand?

    Max??? Please!!!!!!

  39. Ark.Bishop says:

I have tried doing it repeatedly and got the following message:

Cowardly refusing to S-Off this phone
    Error code: 4E D7 B9 21

Any idea how to make it work?

  40. ANTHONY says:

IS THERE ANYONE ELSE HERE THAT GOT THIS TO WORK, AND THEN HAD THEIR PHONE DIE AFTER HAVING THE SCREEN OFF FOR MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES OR SO? THATS WHAT MY PHONE IS DOING NOW, NO MATTER WHAT ROM I FLASH, EVEN RAN RUU BACK TO STOCK, UNROOTED AND ALL. NOW MY PHONE IS SCREWED AND I DONT KNOW IF I CAN BRING IT IN FOR SERVICE TO SPRINT WITH S-OFF. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS CUREABLE……

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

try running it again and make sure you have enough battery while running it. Should be curable.

      • Anthony says:

I tried ruining it again like you suggested with plenty of battery life and it just said that I already have s-off. So I gave up, relocked it, ran the stock ruu and brought it in to Sprint. They told me the phone was bad and would replace it, thank God they still had some, because from what I understand they’ve been discontinued. Anyways I don’t think I’ll be trying this again with my new phone. The trick did worked but it also made my phone useless and at one point it got burning hot front to back. guess I’ll wait for the ota ics if that ever comes….

  41. William says:

hello I have had my evo 3d with hboot 1.5 for the past year and my warranty just ran out so i want to root it now, i tried following the instructions you have here I have one question, do i need to unlock the phone using the HTC dev method first then do the wire trick or can i do it straight in the status my phone is in right now please help!!!! thanks!

    • William says:

One more thing when I run Control bear as admin, it finds device but then say that device has no root, what am I doing wrong

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

You will have to root it first, yes, unlock bootloader, root, then re-lock. I know, it’s a pain but blame it on HTC who gave us the new unlocked bootloader.

So i’m on Viper Redline Rom. Its a Gingerbread rom 2.17.651.5 build. Do I need to go back to the stock rom or can I just start the wire trick method right now? Viper Redline is a custom rom but Max’s wording is a bit confusing. I found out I do have s-on, and I’ve been having issues with my ICS roms working. Hopefully this will help me.

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

I think u have to unroot to stock ROM for guarantee, but you can try on Viper Redline too.

      • Alex says:

Hey max thanks for all of your help. I would like to try to unroot, but I’ve got hboot 1.5 supposedly it has problems with unrooting. It seems like hboot 1.5 S-on users have a lot of issues with ics roms where as you have stated, “hboot 1.4 is the way to go” haha. Is there any way for Hboot 1.5 users to unroot and then try the wire trick method?

        • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

where is this video? i was able to get s-off, but i don’t see the Junobunobear thing on the boot logger, it just says ****unlocked**** i think this is because i didn’t go back to stock ROM before starting. everything still works…except now my G-senor is bad, and i think this may be why

          Search on XDA for: RUU_Shooter_S_Sprint_WWE_2.17.651.5_Radio_1.06.00.1216_NV_NV_spcs_1.42_release_233304_signed.exe

Relock via Fastboot first: fastboot oem lock

I tried to do the Wire trick on my phone and now my phone keeps rebooting over and over again. Please help.. 🙁

  47. Lee says:

Hey, Everything went well on my sprint htc evo 3d. I have S-off on BL 1.5. But my phone says it not activated and gives me a error code 1012 when trying to update profile. Should i call sprint? any ideas.

  48. JustinBear says:

I got success after the wire trick, and it was “waiting to settle”

then reboot to RUU mode (don’t know what RUU mode is)

and it said, “failed to reboot RUU
Please do that manually using the following command:
    adb reboot oem-78”

then it says press enter to quit

so i guess i didn’t get S-Off…so i need to manually enter the adb command…how do i do that?

I was using Viper ROM before I tried this. But I did a wipe and reset to factory settings before i started the ControlBear.exe

    • JustinBear says:

wait, nevermind, I checked in my boot loader, S-OFF! ya. but now its locked. so gotta re-root. HBOOT 1.5

  49. Mike says:

I have tried the wire trick non stop for the last 4 hours….. Maybe 150 times total…. I always get the 66732337 Error. Either i suck at timing this, or something else is happening. If i cant get this to work, how the hell do i get out of the juopunutBear screen?
