How to Install 4EXT Recovery on HTC Evo 3D! [CDMA/GSM]

We’ve got some great news for all HTC Evo 3D owners. Whether you have a CDMA or GSM Evo 3D, now you don’t need to get your phone on S-OFF to install custom ROMs properly. There have been other methods for getting this done without a computer but this new method is probably the simplest of them all, you just have to install 4EXT Recovery and it will take care of the rest for you.

Installation is easy, simply download the APK file, run the application and install 4EXT Recovery.

After that, installing custom ROMs is easy, just boot into Recovery and flash ROMs as if you had S-OFF.

Well, I’ve got 1.50 evo 3d now, seems like it boots but reboots once it boots. Is that what’s happening to you too?

      • william ross says:

Yeah I get to the status bar but that’s as far as it goes and I’ve tried everything like flash image GUI, 4ext, clockworkmod and twrp but I get bootloops everytime unless I use chads kernel but I want to use the kernels that come with the Rom do you have any ideas?

      • eagleboy says:

  3. to3kn33 says:

I tried to download it from my phone, and it keeps saying: “content not supported on this phone.” And: “No application can be found to open this file.” I have evo 3d hboot 1.5 with s-on. What is going on?

  4. Jason says:

    HTC EVO 3D, CDMA, Sprint
    HBOOT 1.5 S-ON Unlocked

Followed the video exactly and installed Mean ICS ROM with 4ext but stuck in a boot loop. It gets to the point where you see a status bar and the “unlock-the-screen” ring and it reboots. Any ideas?

BTW: love your work. keep it up!

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

Trying to solve this issue right now, will have a solution soon!

      • Jason says:

Bah. I just gave up and followed your directions to downgrade HBOOT and now 4EXT works nicely. I installed MeanROM ICS. Running great.

      • Chris says:

Hey dude! so have you found a solution to this problem? Other than downgrading hboot or using controlbear methods to achieve s-off. Thanks for the great pointers!

No flashing of a Rom will affect the flashing of any sort…boost, cricket, etc… Have any of u all tried flashing the boot.img from the Rom u would like through bootloader? Maybe that’s will help a bit.

  14. waide cummins says:

4ext requires s-off so if your stuck with s-on it wont work, try the wire trick to get s-off but i wish you the best of luck with that b/c when i tried it i got stuck in the jboot bootloop and had to reflash everything

  15. Chris says:

I’m having a hard time getting Busybox to install properly – the grant permissions box opened by Busybox the first time it opens goes by so quickly that I have no chance to select it. Busybox opens right on top of it and I can’t return to grant superuser to it. I’ve force stopped, reopened, and the box either doesn’t appear at all or it goes by insanely quickly. I’ve also uninstalled Busybox, reinstalled, and had the same issue. Soft reset (battery out, restart) doesn’t change anything. Help?

Following your guide thus far I am stuck at the 5:00 mark in the video.

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

try another busybox app there’s several on Play Store if you are having trouble with the current one.

  16. JP says:

Wait my ev 3d hboot is 1.5 plus and i tried but busybox keep telling me it cannot be installed.. help?

  17. Skylord123 says:

I used this method to root:

After rooting I restarted my phone and installed 4ext recovery. I am having a strange issue were when you select an option (such as the top one “Online install | Upgrade”) and it freezes. I have killed the app and tried it again and having the same issue over and over.

My current software version is 2.89.651.2 710RD (the latest update)

If you could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

    • Skylord123 says:

It seems as if my device isn’t rooted? I tried installing busy box and a few other apps that require root and they all say that it is unsuccessful to obtain root. The superuser app is installed and I can run it but no other apps that require root run.

Is this due to the update on the system released just a couple days ago or did I mess up somewhere?

  18. Danny says:

    I installed with 4ext recovery, s=on. Once I rebooted, still showed 2.3.4.

  19. chris says:

Max, thanks for all the great info! My 3d is unlocked, with S-on, hboot 1.58, and this 4ext recovery is working flawlessly! Keep up the great work!

  20. Deki says:

    plz help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙁

  23. NinjaMaxx says:

OK…I have the CDMA version with hboot 1.58, rooted, and S-ON. Have both the 4ext updater and control. Can I install ROM’s and have Wi-Fi access?

  24. john says:

when stack in boot loop try to use the boot.img from the rom you want…then use the fastboot to flash it….”fastboot boot boot.img”

  25. Gary near NYC says:

This article is OK, but a little misleading. You cannot install absolutely any ROM on your phone — you need to be sure it is compatible with 4EXT. Fortunately documentation is available to advise you on what’s compatible.

  26. weng wai says:

can i request the evo 3d stock rom!

  27. Adam says:

My evo 3d is stuck in a boot loop at the white htc flash screen. Im unlocked, rooted and have 4ext. Tried flashing zr3d gt 4.1. First boot acted like it was going to run but at some point during the boot it, it rebooted to the white htc screen and wont go any farther. when I try to flash a rom (any rom) in recovery, the process is normal and it says successful, but when I reboot it just goes back flash screen and back in the loop. what can I do from here?
