*Note – This method of rooting currently doesn’t allow you to flash new kernels (so no overclocking) but you can flash new ROMs. If you haven’t done OTA update to HBOOT 1.50, please follow the method outlined here instead.

This new rooting method from HTC works on software version 2.08.651.2 and later using HTC’s unlock method.  You can also do it on all platforms including Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Before we begin, check the software number on your phone by going to Settings->About Phone->Software Information.

Your software number should be 2.08.651.2 or LATER. If not, go do the software update under Settings->System Updates->HTC software update and start over.

For Mac users, please replace “fastboot” with “./fastboot-mac” in the instructions below.

For Linux users, please replace “fastboot” with “./fastboot-linux” in the instructions below.

Step 1. Download file and unzip to root folder of your hard disk or desktop.
(Don’t have unzipping program? Download and install 7Zip first.)

Step 2. Put your Evo 3D in fastboot mode by first going to Settings->Power and make sure “Fast boot” is checked off.

Step 3. Turn off your phone then power up by holding down Power Button and Volume Down button.

Step 4. Hit Power again to enter Fastboot.

Step 5. Connect your Evo 3D to your computer, your phone should say “Fastboot USB”.

Step 6. For Windows, install the HTC drivers HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe in the zip file.  For Linux and Mac you don’t need to install drivers.

Step 7. Open up a command prompt in Windows by typing “cmd” under Start->Search and for Linux and Mac, open up a terminal.

Step 8. Go browse into the directory where you unzipped, for Windows:

cd \rootevo3dnew

cd Desktop\rootevo3dnew

if you unzipped to your desktop.

For Mac and Linux, likewise:

cd /rootevo3dnew

or where you unzipped the files to.

Step 9. Next type:

fastboot oem get_identifier_token

You should get a bunch of code. If you don’t, you have an older OTA, go do the software update under Settings->System Updates->HTC software update and start over.

Step 10. Now, copy everything starting with <<<< Identifier Token Start >>>>  and ending with <<<<< Identifier Token End >>>>> .

*Note – In Windows, when you copy, sometimes it adds a white space to the beginning, if you get errors, try copying the token to Notepad then getting rid of spaces before pasting it to HTC’s site.

Step 11. Go to and sign up as a user.  Then goto Unlock Bootloader->Get Started->Begin Unlock Bootloader.  Agree to the legal terms, proceed all the way to Step 10 and paste the token you just copied.

Step 12. If you get errors, try the Notepad tip above, otherwise you should be getting a file called Unlock_code.bin as an attachment in your e-mail.
Download this file off your e-mail then copy the file over to the rootevo3dnew directory.

Step 13.  Next go back to your command prompt/terminal and type:

fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

Step 14. Go to your phone and hit the Volume Up button and then Power button to unlock bootloader.

Step 15. If you got this far, congratulations, your Evo 3D’s bootloader has been unlocked!!!

Step 16. Your phone will reboot.

Step 17. Put your Evo 3D in fastboot mode by first going to Settings->Power and make sure “Fast boot” is checked off. (Again, yes).

Turn off your phone then power up by holding down Power Button and Volume Down button.

Hit Power again to enter Fastboot.

Step 18. Type the following to install ClockworkMod Recovery:

fastboot flash recovery cwm-

Step 19. Go back to your phone and choose Bootloader then hit the Power Button.

Then choose Recovery then hit the Power Button.

Step 20. When you get Revolutionary CWM blue menus, go to “mounts and storage” using your Volume buttons and hit the Power button.

Then choose “mount USB storage” and hit the Power button.

Step 21. Go to your computer and copy over to your Evo 3D.

Step 22. Go back to your phone and hit Power button to get out of USB mode.  Then choose “+++++Go Back+++++” and hit the Power button.

Then choose “install zip from sdcard” and hit the Power button.

Then choose “choose zip from sdcard” and hit the Power button.

Then choose and hit the Power button.

Choose “Yes” and hit the Power button.

Step 23. Reboot and enjoy root!

After rooting my Evo 3D using HTC Unlock method, I still get S-ON?

It doesn’t matter, the HTC Unlock method gives you a fully unlocked bootloader, the S-ON is meaningless once you unlock as you can install recovery and ROMs.

Can you still flash custom kernels?

Yes, you can still flash custom kernels but you need to launch ClockworkMod Recovery from Fastboot.   I recommend you use this method for flashing any kind of ROMs too.

Don’t want to root your phone for some reason? You can always perma-temp root it, which only gives you root until you reboot.

Gentlemen! All of you who have been having problems installing the recovery, GREAT NEWS! You, we, all have downloaded a bad recovery. Download the recovery again and again and retry installing again and again until it goes through. That’s what I did. I downloaded a good recovery and reinstalled in using the fastboot flash recovery command and PRESTO! Someone needs to post a good recovery download because all the ones I downloaded where bad. This time you don’t need Luck! And, we all owe HTC Evo 4G Hacks a HIGH 5!

I’m trying to unlock my bootloader following the HTC instuctions but get this error (i’ve verified my unlock token string was put into HTCs website properly and that i had flashed the latest RUU). Any ideas?

I’m having the exact same issue. I’ve followed the guide step by step and I can’t get the to install. I rebooted and checked if I have root, and it says that I don’t have root. What’s going on?

  7. J says:

The instructions don’t mention that this will wipe out your phone/profile/apps. But in the video, it seems like it does. However in the very beginning of the video, I noticed you mentioned that you are rooting after having just unrooted. So the question is: does this method wipe out your phone? Or was that just a function of your phone’s previous state? (Currently HBOOT 1.58) Thanks!

    hboot 1.58
    software – 2.95.651.5 710RD

    any ideas?

    • Wilson says:

Have you figured out how to unlock 1.58? I have tried everything on XDA and from this site and nothing. Plus this new OTA broke swype and the phone randomly click on apps and does weird stuff.

  15. victor says:

hey your video is the best thanks but one question i have the HTC EVO V 4G its basically the the HTC EVO 3D i want to know if your instructions will work.

  16. doncoper says:

    hello fellas,
For all the people who are having problem executing “cwm-” you need to first make sure that you have downloaded “” and not just “” the difference is that the word “new” which makes a lot of difference. Any who please i see some of you are having problem with locating the “” please go to 1) Step 1 and look between the “Sponsored Links” which is under the Step 1, people look at the bottom text “Sponsored Links” which is right above the flash adbanner and you will see that it says ‘’ its a little confusing, because it looks like it is a sponsored add but it is the link to download the root file. Hope this helped a lot of you.

    I do have a question?
I am stuck on the the last step I am unable to execute “” from my phone and is keep failing and without it I will not have a root access if some one recently resolved this problem or know the solution people email me at or replay here.

    Thank you

  17. ryan says:

Followed the guide worked fine. But I installed titanium backup and it’s giving me an error message any help would be great.

  18. jacob says:

I successfully rooted my 3D but after about half the day all my apps started telling me i didnt have root access like the phone un-rooted itself somehow? any suggestions?

  20. Jason says:

TO those seeing errors loading the suzip and have virgin mobile phone.
When you load the cwm and get the error message.. turn off your phone
restart. goto settings once it has loaded.. shutdown and attempt again.
    it should work

  21. Mark says:

I followed all these steps and when I reboot it is stuck on the HTC splash screen. Any advice?

  22. Phil Fowler says:

Jase and Jermmkay – try “wipe cache partition” just above “install zip from sdcard”, follow the instructions, then proceed to “install from sdcard”. That’s what I had to do to get it to work.

  23. Dean England says:

Well done boys keep up the good work

  24. Adam says:

I’m going mental now. Which part actually ROOTS the phone? Since following this guide, I have also changed the CID (to downgrade hboot, which was pointless in the end), and ran Juopunuts bears s-off tool, which has given me s-off.
My bootloader doesn’t say UNLOCKED anymore, it says Juopunuts bears. My hboot is now 1.5.7777.
I cannot run 4EXT or BusyBox. RootChecker has confirmed my phone is NOT rooted.

I followed this guide to a tee without any problems (I think, unless I downloaded a bad recovery). Can I flash the superuser files again even after s-off?

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

The part where you flash Superuser zip file is actually where your phone gets rooted. You need to unlock bootloader to install a custom recovery. You need a custom recovery to install that zip file so…

      • Adam says:

Thank you Max. My phone was definitely unlocked before I ran Juopunuts Bears/wire trick, and so I think I must not have properly flashed the superuser file.
If the bootloader is still unlocked after I set s-off, can I just run Superuser from here, or do I need to start over again? (ie. go back to Stock RUU, s-on, etc)

  25. Jonathan says:

    Hello, I appreciate the step by step instructions. However, when I try to apply update from .zip file on SD card, it tells me;

    E:Error in /sdcard/
    Installation aborted.

Any help or suggestions would be great!!! Thank you in advance.

  26. Kevin says:

I followed the instructions and did the unlock token. When I got back to Fastboot, it says it’s still locked. I followed the instructions and my phone is up to date, so what could be the problem here?

  27. Joe says:

I’ve successfully used this method to unlock and root my gf’s evo 3d sprint cdma. Thank you!

Having read many different sites about different roms, I am confused about which ROMS are available at this point. They warn of “s-on” or “s-off” “don’t use superwipes” and “hboot 1.57 or lower”. Perhaps you can help me understand my options.

    My phone says
    shooter xc ship s-on rl

It has 4.0.3 android, stock sprint rom, which I would like to replace with jellybean, without the HTC sense stuff. I am looking for fast, stable, and all the normal stuff works.

Can you point me in the right direction?

    • Ben says:

I’m in the same boat. I want to install the unofficial cyanogenmod for the EVO 3D and it has all of those qualifications you mentioned. Did you figure something out?

  28. Jais says:

I am stuck at step 20 in the instruction and i am not getting the Revolutionary menu at all.
    Phone boots up as normal.
    Model: HTC EVO 3D X515a
    Android: 4.0.3
    HBOOT: 1.53.007

  29. fahad says:

i just rooted my evo3d by this method . but now it does not show usb debugging in settings . any help?

  30. Andy says:

I have HTC EVO 3d (Virgin Mobile)
    hboot 1.58

I followed all of these steps and everything worked fine just like in the video. HOWEVER, the phone does not appear to be rooted. It does show unlocked but root access is not granted to update superuser or to use titanium backup. Root access always fails.

    Did I do something wrong?

Ultimately I want to flash this phone from Virgin Mobile to Pagesplus but without root access I do not know if it can be done..

  31. logancrat says:

I have gotten through every step of the process, except getting the superuser .zip to install. I, like some others, are getting:

    E: Error is /sdcard/
    (Status 0)
    Installation aborted.

I tried Phil Fowler’s suggestion to “wipe cache partition” before i used “install zip from card”, but nothing changed. I also simply tried it over and over again, and nothing changed. I am going to try formatting this SD card and maybe seeing if there are updated superuser files I’m needing to use. I know I’m not the only person who has had this problem.

  32. Brian says:

    To fix the /sdcard/
    (Status 0)
Installation aborted. error I simply put the zip file in its own folder.
