How to Root HTC Evo 3D!

UPDATE: For those of you on Software number 2.08.651.2 or later OR HBOOT 1.50 and later, please see new root method for Evo 3D here.

For GSM HTC Evo 3D, you must downgrade your HBOOT to 1.49.0007 then use this method.

Hi folks,

It looks like we have full S-OFF permanent root, you can follow the video and instructions below. My Evo 3D has been rooted FINALLY! And you should do it before it gets blocked with OTA update.

Here’s how to permanently root your HTC Evo 3D and also S-OFF on the bootloader so you can install new ROMs:

This guide is for Windows-based computers only, I will have another blog post on how to do it with Linux and Mac soon.

First, connect your Evo 3D to your computer via a micro USB cable and put your phone into USB Debugging mode under Settings->Applications->Development.

Next, download the file (which contains everything you need) and unzip it to the root directory of your hard disk such as c:\rootevo3d.

Install the Evo 3D drivers in this folder by running “HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe”.  Please install these drivers even if you have installed drivers before otherwise the rooting method will not work!

When the drivers are installed, you can verify under Device Manager that there’s My HTC under Android USB Devices.

Next open up a command prompt by typing “cmd” under Start->Search, then browse to your rootevo3d folder by typing:

cd \rootevo 3d

Then type:

adb devices

to find the serial number of your Evo 3D.

If you get something like HT168HX09557, that’s your serial number, write it down on a notepad as we will need it later.

If you don’t get this, that means you haven’t installed the drivers correctly or your phone is not in USB Debugging mode. (Also turn off Disk Drive Mode, set it to Just Charge.)

Next, we are going to find the HBOOT version number of your Evo 3D.  Take the batteries out then reboot your phone into bootloader mode by holding down both Volume Down and the Power Button.

Mine says “1.40.0000”, make a note of this as we will need it later and reboot your Evo 3D.

Next, goto this site and get your beta code by putting in the serial number and choosing the HBOOT.

(For GSM Evo 3D, choose “HTC Evo 3D GSM” and HBOOT “1.49.0007”

Save this beta key/code as we will need to enter it later.

Next, go back to the command prompt and type:

Enter your beta key you got earlier here when it asks you and your Evo 3D will start rooting!

It should reboot your Evo 3D a couple times and you will see “S-OFF”!

When it’s done rooting, it will ask you to download recovery and install it, just hit Y.

If that all went successfully, congrats, your phone’s bootloader is unlocked now and you have ClockworkMod Recovery installed.  The only thing left to do is install SuperUser app.

Choose “Bootloader” and hit the Power Button.

Choose “Recovery” and hit the Power Button, this will get you into ClockworkMod Recovery.

Once in ClockworkMod Recovery, choose “mounts and storage” and hit the Power button.

Choose “mount USB storage” and hit the Power button.  This will put your Evo 3D into disk drive mode without having you to reboot your phone.

Go to your computer and copy over the file to the SD card of your Evo 3D.

Unmount your Evo 3D in ClockworkMod Recovery then choose “install zip from sdcard” from main menu.

Choose “choose zip from sdcard” and hit the Power button.

Choose “” and hit the Power button.

It should install the Superuser app.  For those of you who’ve temp-rooted or perma-temp rooted, you might get installation abort error like me but just ignore it as that’s because you already have Superuser app installed.

Reboot your Evo 3D and it should activate your phone (again).

When everything comes back up, you should see that Superuser app is installed and you can run rooted apps!

If you rooted your Evo 3D, don’t forget to thank the guys over at who made it all happen!

Installing Recovery failed, what do I do?

See how to install ClockworkMod Recovery manually.
Does rooting erase my apps and contacts?

No, this rooting method doesn’t erase any of your apps and contacts, just don’t do factory wipe like some “others” are saying, follow our guide.

My camera is not working after rooting!

Try rebooting your phone a couple times, sometimes right after rooting, some apps might be a bit buggy but couple reboots will fix it all.

What does rooting Evo 3D give me?

You can get cool stuff like free wifi tethering, USB tethering, ability to backup/restore ROMs, and also install new ROMs.    Most ROMs also give you easily double-battery life over stock with minimal bloatware so there’s nothing to lose but everything to gain.

Can I brick my Evo 3D while rooting?

That’s hard to do if you follow all of our directions carefully.  And there’s always a way to unbrick Evo 3D so no, there’s not really a way to brick your phone.

Does this method work on Evo 4G or other phones?

No, this rooting method is ONLY for Evo 3D, please DO NOT TRY on other phones and that could brick your phone.

Don’t want to root your phone for some reason? You can always perma-temp root it, which only gives you root until you reboot.

well it took awhile, but I finally got it! For the people who are having trouble with the adb, do an internet search for android adb and sdk, Once you download adb sdk manager, look to the left and look under available files. you will have to install 3.0, 3.1 or 3.2. I still had the problem of revolutionary not working at the end, so i had to run the permatemproot and flash clockwork that way. Now that its rooted, lets get to the roms and kernals

  2. John M says:

Where’s that MAc and Linux tutorial you promised??

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

Sorry, I am gonna get to it next week! This week I am stuck at my mom’s, my computer is so slow, I should have brought my fast i7 laptop.

  5. mike says:

I show S-Off but i have not been able to Wifi Tether. I then looked to see if i had Superuser app. Which i did not have. When i went back in to unzip the file off SD Card it did not work. Question? Do i need to reroot the phone or can i just reinstall the Superuser app some other way? PLEASE HELP.

    • travis says:

U can install superuser from market. In order to use WiFi, u have to download a mirror of the old android tether apk. It’s not on the market. Just do a Google search for Android WiFi tether. I know Max has the link under his video

      • mike says:

DONE DONE and DONE. Thanks. got the app off Market and it ran Perfectly. Great instructional video i might add. See you all on the DARK SIDE!

  6. mike says:

I show connection to the evo on ipad but nothing seems to load up via web or even twitter. I show about 7mbs on a speedtest i ran on the evo…. thoughts?

also i saw an app you were using that gave the connection speeds for the connected devices. what app was that?

  7. JG says:

Is there a link to install the drivers? And where is the link for super user?

  8. Martin says:

Thanks, followed your text here and completed root in less than 10mins-

  9. Ryan says:

I rooted everything and installed superuser and it came out exactly as the video showed…It looks like the tethering works now, but I can’t make calls or receive calls…How do I fix this? It says that I’m getting an error 16 when I call someone…

  10. Ian says:

I am in the beginning stage of rotting my EVO 3D. I installed the HTC drivers but when I ran cmd daemon ran but it showed no serial. Please Help!

    • travis says:

Try taking Ur battery out and reboot. If that doesn’t work your adb might be out of date and you will need to update those through SDK manager.

      • Ian says:

Rebooting did not do the trick. I am fairly new to this, can you explain a little about SDK manager and what I should do. I really appreciate your help.

        • travis says:

Go to start menu on Ur computer and in file search bar, type in SDK. It should then bring up something like android-sdk, if so click on it. You can also do a Google search on android adb-SDK and it will walk you through the steps of updating. It took me almost 9 hrs to root because my adb was out of date

  11. Ian says:

Okay got it thank you. How do I know if my evo 3d’s HBOOT is 1.30.0000 or 1.40.0000?

  12. Ian says:

    Okay yeah I’m an idiot.

  13. Ian says:

Success! I have su but there are no apps within. Two empty tabs “apps” and “settings” (other than settings). It is version

  14. Todd says:

I get all the way to Acquiring root (method 3) and it gets hung up there. It does nothing after that. Please help with what I may be doing wrong. Thanks.

  15. kyle says:

how do i unroot evo 3d .i am having issues getting set cpu i have tried both rcmix kernels and both get an error when i try to unzip from sd card say install aborted ??? .i think i need to reroot evo 3d again . or try something else the way i am still running stock rom .thanks for any help

  16. Ian says:

I am also having an issue getting any cpu managing software working. Can some one recommend a good app. I have a evo 3d s-off and rooted running stock rom. It seems every thing else worked properly, I can uninstall factory apps and use wireless tethering.

  17. Erica says:

I got my phone to root perfectly, and got super user installed. I went to install the wifi tethering app, but when i connect it says connected but with errors, and under show log it says “activating wifi intercace…..failed” anyone have any solutions for this?? Or another tethering app ??? PLEASE HELP!!!!

  18. Jonathan says:

I am having a problem trying to turn S-off. When i do the “revolutionary.exe” step, i get “Acquiring root …” but instead of it going through and continuing i get a problem. The problem is “_rawadb_handle_msg: unknown command 69766564” and it just hangs there. I don’t know if i did something wrong. I have tried to redo it more than once, and every single time i get the same problem. I follow the instructions exactly and i still get the same problem. I would really like some help on this.

    • travis says:

I had same problem. Your adb needs updated. Go to file search in your start menu and type adb or android adb-SDK and go into adb-sdk manager. Look to the left and look for available software. You have to have 3.0 or higher.

      • Jonathan says:

Thanks Travis, all i needed to do was install the manager program, and everything else worked like a charm. Thanks for the help, greatly appreciated.

      • Jonathan says:

Just started using the phone, and now i get “SMS Error – Radio Interface Resource Shortage” over and over again. And i was wondering what did it mean. Also my text messages wont send from time to time. So once again, i need help.

      • Jonathan says:

Also i cant make/send calls and/or text messages anymore.

  19. kyle says:

Erica .just go to ROM manager and recovery the WiFi tether did the same thing to mine .doesn’t work

  20. travis says:

Erica…just click the link I put up from Ur phone. It should start downloading straight to Ur phone

    • Erica says:

i downloaded it from the phone and it says it cant open file??? Any more help would be greatly appreciated!!!

      • travis says:

Make sure you have unknown sources checked under your settings. I believe it is under developmental. I just clicked the link and it downloaded. I hope it helps

  21. Erica says:

i downloaded this AndroidTether: from internet on my phone, but i cannot open it up??? Any suggestions on what to do now?? Just trying to get tethering to work.

  22. kyle says:

You were to download ROM manager first right after you root your phone .you have to save a recovery point in case your phone crashes .now I don’t know what to do then maybe check on the site xda developers .they mite have a fix for that .

  23. connor says:

i generated the key a million times and did everything correctly but when i enter it in cmd it says invaild key and that its aborting. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

    • travis says:

May sound crazy, but r u typing it in exactly how it looks? Caps where they need to be and lowercase, etc…I know first couple of times, I just typed in all lower case and it did not work

      • connor says:

the thing is i copied it and pasted it. that didnt work then i typed it in exactly how it was and it still said invalid key and ive tried everything it just seems to not work.

      • 321kickass says:

im stuck on this point as well, and no matter what i try it still sais “invalid beta key, aborting…”

please help me.. i really want a root, thanks.

  24. Ian says:

Some thing happened to my phone after I successfully rooted it. I was unable to make or receive phone calls a few hours after rooting. Instead I got a error message which then transferred me to a rep to troubleshoot issue. They said it was a security issue. I validated my account and they sent a “signal” to my phone solving the issue. My phone works perfectly now. Not sure if this info if valuable to anyone or not just thought I’d post it.

  25. dave says:

After i enter the beta code and hit enter i keep getting invalid beta key, have any idea where i went wrong

  26. Jonathan says:

I was able to finally get my phone running right after i did what Ian said. All you have to do is just make a call, you’ll get an error message, after that it makes a call to a sprint rep. You just verify your account, and they fix the problem. Just turn off your phone for at least 30 seconds, then turn it on, and make a call that will last atleast 30 seconds also. then it should be fix.

  27. Infidel says:

All I get is – [Invalid beta key, aborting…]

  28. xoaquin says:

when entering the beta key it says invalid key???

  29. VIn says:

I did everything I had to do but it says invalid beta key, aborting. Can you help me?????? please?????

    • Crystal says:

This is the same thing that is happening to me (invalid beta key aborting) I have tried everything to get this to work and i dont know what else to do I have spent 2 days working on rooting my evo 3d and getting very frustrated can someone PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE…..

      • D4v1dtn says:

Redownload the files from and copy over the ones you do ownloaded from here(it won’t be all of them btw). And try again…… It worked for me… Then after you done. Rooting it will say failed. And it won’t you the option to install the recovery right away so reboot your phone and run cmd again and write revolutionary. Exe. Again that will start the recovery again and just finish the rest of the installation then if you want the wifi tether to work you need to download the newest beta version from In the settings, there’s something called ‘Routing fix – (enable routing fix for HTC devices)’.I checked that box. And it works like a charm…… Good luck

  30. brandon says:

i obtained s-off but when i try to connect to WIFI it says “error” and i’m unable to call out, receive calls or go online when my phone is on ROAMING… what do i do?

  31. hyuh says:

Remove the revolutionary download from this page, they are invalid versions. Link to the original source and provide the correct attribution and credit to the people who actually did the work.

  32. LAex3 says:

i can’t message or call people after i rooted my phone what happened to it??

  33. kyle says:

You need your phone refreshed from sprint .its ok mine did the same thing after root

  34. Jason D says:

Does anyone have a problem with the phone restarting by itself several times a day?

Also on a side note I was getting alot of FCs after I got my phone rooted because of the HTC updates that it keeps trying to get me to download ( I think ) does anyone know how to update this HTC software updates or maybe the FCs was caused by something else? In the future when the OS is updated how will we be able to update it? download it to a sd care and run revolutionary?

guys, would rooting enable me to activate the phone on Sprint without a data plan? I care less for their data plan. WIFI is more than enough for me. Or, is there something else I can do? I found one post where a guy says that he was able to flash his evo 4g and acctivate it without the data plan. I have a evo 3d.
