How to Unroot Your HTC Evo 3D!

For some reason, if you need to unroot your HTC Evo 3D back to stock, here’s how to do it if you used Revolutionary root method (won’t work if you are on HBOOT 1.50 and rooted with HTC Method!). Also, Sprint isn’t so tough about returning rooted phones, last week I returned my Evo 3D with root(HTC Method) and ROM because I kept getting error 16, got an exchange no questions asked!

Step 1. Download file here then copy over to the root folder of your Evo 3D’s SD card:

Step 2. Make sure Fastboot is checked OFF under Settings->Power.

Step 3. Turn your Evo 3D off then boot into bootloader by holding down Volume down and Power button together.

Step 4. Wait until your phone recognizes file, then hit Volume Up button to start the flashing process.

Step 5. When it’s done reboot and you should be back on a stock ROM without SuperUser.

Step 6. Erase on your SD Card as we need to get into fastboot mode.

Step 7. Download and unzip to the root folder of your hard drive.

Step 8. Put your phone into fastboot mode by rebooting into bootloader (like Step 4) then choose Fastboot in bootloader and connect the USB cable to your computer.  You should see “Fastboot USB” on your Evo 3D.

Step 9. Open up a command prompt or terminal on your computer and browse to your fastboot directory by typing:

cd \fastboot

for Windows or

cd /fastboot

for Linux/Mac

Then type:

fastboot oem writesecureflag 3

for Windows or

./fastboot-mac oem writesecureflag 3

for Mac or

./fastboot-linux oem writesecureflag 3

for Linux.

That should be it, when you reboot your bootloader, you will get S-ON.

    Hey Max,

I noticed that you got an error 16 message so you needed to return your phone, all you have to do to fix an error 16 is call Sprint and get a tech on the phone that knows what he/she is doing, then they have to change a code that revolutionary changes while trying to root. Then you will be able to use you device again then you might have to update

I needed to do this 3 different times that I rooted 3 different EVO 3ds, but that’s ok though.

Thank you for all of you help, I love it.

I have da same problem (error 16) is there anyway I can put dat my self instead of a tech @ spunk….I mean sprint? I’m a noob and wanna learn

  2. William Tavares says:

The that i am talking about is for getting access to recovery, because usually when you get an error 16, that doesn’t go far enough for you to gain clockwork. Unless if you have another way to do it. I am just trying to be helpful if you know what I mean.

    Thank you

  3. preston says:

i did everything what it said in the video but when i try to search for update it keeps saying my phone is up to date, is there any other way to update my phone?

    • thaddeus8888 says:

Same thing happened to me. After about 2 or 3 days it finally came in. But, I wish that I wouldn’t have done it. Now my 3d is extra slow and I can’t get any good roms and NO KERNALS at all. So, that means no overclocking.

  4. Jon Y. says:

HELP!!!!! What do we do if we rooted our evo, backed up our stock rom, but forget to back up our apps? I tried installing a rom and it installed perfectly, but when it comes to using the phone everything keeps force closing (mail application, android, n everything else). This was the first time i’ve ever rooted my phone and installed a rom. I tried finding titanium back up n Rom manager, which I couldn’t find either one. My phone will click on and everything, but i cant actually use the phone. I tried putting the phone to factory reset….and thats how i got to where i am now.

Is there anyway to unroot after rooting using the hboot 1.5 method? I accidently put a evo 4g recovery on my 3d. now when I try to enter recovery it freezes. already tried adb and loading both are a no go. Any suggestions?

You need the ruu from sprint it is a file that runs from the pc. Email me and I will send you a link if you still need it.

      • Tarek says:

Not sure how to get in touch with you, but I’d appreciate the RUU so I have a way to unroot the HBOOT 1.5 (HTC method) unlocked EVO 3D.

I hope you still get on here and check comments!

wow thanks a lot bro!!! i cracked…well shattered my screen and had to get a replacement and this video helped me out a lot!!!! the only problem i had with it is that when moving the file over to my sd i had to remove the .zip extension which is not stated above. but thanks man you are the man!!

  10. ronnie says:

when i do fastboot it says “waiting on device” any suggestions to fix

  11. Chad says:

if you could send me the stock Ruu for sprint and or give me advice that would be great, I’m having a ton of problems. First it started off my phone wouldn’t boot into recovery once i updated recovery via Rom Manager. Then i reloaded original recovery in your Unlocking Tutorial and that works now….but now i can’t restore or backup my roms. When i go and try to restore the stock rom using and the blue bar just goes to the top and them it goes straight to the boot loader again, doesn’t update. I unlocked/rooted my phone using the htc unlock method….i just wanna get it back to the stock

    Hi Max,

I rooted my EVO 3D with HTC method a weeks ago because I need the wireless tether function.
However, my EVO 3D missed its chinese interface and chinese input method after rooted.
Therefore I come back here looking for a way to UNROOT my phone back to stock version.

So far, is there any possibility of unrooting my EVO 3D with HBOOT 1.5 rooted with HTC method?

    Thanks in advance.

Is there any mirror where I can get the image? because I’ve downloaded it several times and I’m not able to install it, when I try to open the zip it says its damaged (I know I don’t have to unzip, just checking if the file is not corrupt) also md5 checksum is different. Thanks in advance.

  15. Sean says:

I have tried to use multiple images including the HTC RUU’s but I can’t get it to register and let me update to unroot. Having problems with the phone and need to return it. Suggestions? Hboot 1.5 S-ON

  16. Sean says:

  18. Seth says:

After loading the .zip file it doesnt give me the option to update it, it goes straight back to fastboot home page. Also, is there a way to root so i dont have to unlock the phone, i would like to get updates, but with the unlocked phone i cant do that.

I am having an issuer after following instructions above on un-rooting evolutionary. Once I completed steps to the T I powered down the phone and now it is unresponsive. No LED charging light and no response to the power button. I tried taking the battery out and even tried loading with volume down button suppressed. Sort of feeling like I have a expensive paper weight, insight please!!!

  26. Hey Max, Hennepun here from YouTube. I saw the link did not attach well to that message, so i thought I’d link it here as well.
    Much love bro!

  27. steve says:

Hey Max, I tried to unroot following your instructions. However, after flashing, I pressed reboot but it keeps looping on the “htc” and “htc quietly brilliant” screens over and over again. I tried to go into recovery and wipe cache, dalvik and reset to manufacture setting but that didn’t work. I tried to flash again but I encountered the same problem. How do I resolve this?

  28. Hapchetsut says:

I have an unrooted Sprint HTC 4G phone that I want to use on the Virgin Mobile network. I went to the website to swap phones and tried punching in the number that’s under the battery, but it didn’t work. Naturally, a phone call to Virgin resulted in them telling me there’s no way. There must be a way. How do I circumvent the phone company scam where I can only use THEIR phones on THEIR network? The kicker is, of course, that Virgin Mobile uses the Sprint network, so I know there has to be a way.

  29. Dave Kaylor says:

Tries to process the but shows a bunch of items very fast and then the menu to go to fastboot. I do have UNLOCKED, but I also have S-ON (don’t know why or how). I believe I have the original ROM ( backed up on a computer. Is the S-ON preventing me from getting any further, and if so how do I fix that?
