How to Root HTC Evo 4G LTE!



Here’s how to root HTC Evo 4G LTE!

This root method will give you full root and busybox to your HTC Evo 4G LTE.

If you have software version 1.22.651.3 or higher, you will need to go straight to unlocking bootloader and rooting instead!!!

This is for Windows.

For Mac, please see How to Root HTC Evo 4G LTE on Mac OSX!

For Linux, please see How to Root HTC Evo 4G LTE on Linux/Ubuntu!

Step 1. First, you will want to make sure USB debugging is checked ON under Settings->Developer options.

Step 2. Connect your Evo 4G LTE to your computer and make sure USB connection is set to “Charge only”.

Step 3. Make sure you have drivers installed for your Windows computer.  Go into device manager and make sure you have “My HTC” or some kind of “ADB” driver.

If you have “Android 1.0” with exclamation mark, manually update the drivers using appropriate Windows drivers below:

Step 4. Once you have the correct drivers installed, rooting is easy as double-clicking on runme.bat.

Step 5. Your Evo 4G LTE will reboot about 3 times and will root.

Step 6. Once rebooted after rooting, verify you have “SuperSU” app and you can now run rooted apps like Android Wifi Tether.

          That’s due to incompatibility between HTC Sync and Android SDK. You can download a tool that fixes the bug here: http://visualgdb.com/adbfix.

      There’s no S-OFF for this phone yet, that usually takes at least 2-3 weeks of coding so I would suggest you be patient.

      Did you run SuperSU app after rooting? Make sure you run it at least once to update binaries.

In your video you run wireless tether, which I am able to as well, but when I try searching for new networks on my laptop, running windows 7 – 64bit, I am not able to pick up the wifi connection from my phone. Are you able to notice your network? If so what are a few things one can do to get wireless tether to work?

    HELP!!!! BRICKED. Is ther a way to do a factory reset or boot into the bootloader without going into settings. My screen is blank , the notification bar comes down but wont go into settings. Not htc home screen, no lockscreen. On he command prompt, everything was fine through the 1st 2 reboots then like 20 error messages came up saying “multiple device” Cant find device”. It then said I was rooted , but the blank phone..Is there a way to factory reset through boot by holding power and volume like the original?

        Make sure you only have one Android device connected and just run it again. You have two android devices and its confusing the script.

        I actually had to un-install HTC sync and for some reason, my sd card was mounting instead of being on “Charge only”. After I did a factory reset, I flashed the RUU to remove the “tamper”. Then I was able to root with no problem.

    I figured it out. Not root. I wont be trying that again. To restart the frozen phone(kinda like a battery pull), hold down the power button. There will be a countdown to power off. Only then can you hold vol down and power to reboot to bootloader and select factory reset. Luckily it worked.

    I synced the phone and manually downloaded SU because it would never show up. Tried the root process again but still nothing.

    I rooted my Htc Evo Lte,but i couldn’t get wifi tether to work. I found this hack for free wifi tether no root needed just type in http://foxfi.com/bin/ on your cell phone and download it. then hit activate wifi hotspot that’s it!     Hey Zito, I have a USB 3.0 on my windows PC. I can root just fine, but in bootloader, when I connect the USB cable it does not connect. How can I remedy this?

      Try using a USB 2.0 port on your PC and also manually update the drivers if you still don’t get FASTBOOT USB.

    Hey Max – your method is awesome. I couldn’t believe how simple it is. Thanks!

    I am also running into the same issues as some other people as well around wifi tether. The closest I can get to is an adhoc mode without WPA encryption. I used to be able to get to an infrastructure mode with WPA encryption on my EVO4g (original) using WIFI Tether by Müller, Lemons, Buxton. However, I think the issue has something to do with the wpa_supplicant. Not sure if anyone else here has some experience with this file. It looks like others have hacked this particular setup on a Galaxy Tab.

    Max I could use some help with the root or the actual file links are the issue. Each time i try to download a file i get different file suites that I do not want that avg is also detecting as virus software. I let one of them install and it installed a file manager suite but I never got the drivers for the 64 bit and I had the same problem when trying to download the root file itself, could you please tell me what the issue is or provide me with a clean direct link to the file maybe on XDA.com or something. Thanks much appreciated.

    Nm i got it sorted out the download link itself is essentially just kind of buried amidst all those software suites but I found the files I needed so I shouldn’t need any assistance I’ll post a comment if I have any issues. Thanks 🙂

      You have to unlock bootloader first.

        Thank you for the reply. As I understand it, unlocking the bootloader wipes the phone. I am trying to find the best way to make the most complete backup of the EVO that has this root method applied as I want to keep the stock ROM and be able to restore everything if needed. In my case, I now have to get another LTE 4G as mine all of a sudden had three “bubbles” appear beneath the glass (another user posted about this). I want to find a way to backup everything and just restore to new phone. Is the best way going to be Titanium Backup Pro?

I succesfully rooted my HTC EVO 4G lte but I discovered that google wallet is not working is this because of the root is there a fix for it.     just found out how to get s-off using LazyPanda. Its on the xda developers website. Its fast and easy just like rooting it. Download plug your phone usb debugging is on then just click on FeedPanda.exe and the program will do the rest. Thnks xda and zedomax .

    I have the same problem. Im a driver so I need good a signal reception on the road and the first week I used this phone I noticed how poor of reception I had on it anywhere I went I noticed the difference between the 3d and the LTE. So in the end I the LTE went in the drawer and almost sold it on ebay because a phone is only as good as its carrier’s reception.

    I’m guessing that the runbat.exe is in the wrong
    place or the drivers or hrs sync is installed. Try to turn it on with power button and volume down at the same time it should let you in to bootloader. It’s very hard to brick this phones.

        I’ve tried so many ways, but some how I’m in the bootloader loop. So I went onto the recovery mode, and I’m getting messages saying “failed to mount /sdcard (invalid argument)”. My computer recognizes the phone as a removable drive but its recommending to format my phone. I doubt that is a good way to fix it.

        Sorry man, I hate to bother you but it seems like I screwed up big time.

    I had the same problem when I did a factory reset from twrp. It would tell me I that I needed to format the storage so I did full aware it could mess up my phone. Well I’m happy to say that everything went all right I still had twrp but all my backups where gone so I had to reflash that’s all.

    My phone is rooted with this method and is currently on the stock ROM. There is an OTA update today. If I am using RootKeeper, am I safe to apply the OTA update and still keep the root?

      I tried this without RootKeeper installed and it failed three times. I ended up backing up my phone, did a complete removal of root (remove “TAMPERED”), applied the original RUU and then updated with OTA.

      But now, I am curious if the rooting again after the update is safe.

        I went ahead and tried to apply the OTA update, but it would not start. It kept taking me to the “recovery menu” (boot screen with options).

        I’m not sure how to even initiate the OTA with this root method.

        So, how can one now get the latest OTA and also restore root?

    but then the script hangs. The phone never reboots.

    I suspect that there’s something in the connection to the phone which the script is waiting for, but that it doesn’t actually check, so that instead of saying something like “can’t talk to phone.” it just hangs.

    Yes, looks like $varadb wait-for-device is never finishing.

    Any suggestions?
