How to get FREE Wifi Tether Mobile Hotspot on your HTC Evo 4G!

For those of you who want to get FREE 3G/4G wifi tethering on your HTC Evo 4G, there’s an app called Android Wifi Tether you can install.

The only requirement is that you must root your HTC Evo 4G first.  (You can read my full step-by-step instructions on how to root your HTC Evo 4G.)

Once you’ve rooted your phone, simply browse your HTC Evo 4G’s browser to Android Wifi Tether download page.  (Or just do a search on Google for “Android Wifi Tether”)

Make sure to download the latest version wireless_tether_2_0_2-pre14.apk or better otherwise the free wifi 3G/4G tether won’t work!

Download the file like I am doing here:

Then open it with Package Installer like this:

Install the Wifi Tether app.

Open the app and start tethering for free on Sprint’s 3G or 4G network.

You can press “menu” to change your SSID, 128-bit WEP key, and also to restrict connections via MAC address.

Also, when a device connects, your HTC Evo 4G should “buzz” indicating a device connected.

I think at this point, Sprint needs to offer the HTC Evo 4G Mobile Hotspot for free instead of charging extra $30/month as users will eventually get around hacking it.

Well, this is good news anyways, enjoy now and don’t forget to subscribe to our blog for more cool HTC Evo 4G Hacks and tutorials! 🙂

My computer connects to it but it says limited access and I cant go to any websites.

    • chris says:

HTC EVO 4G HotSpot Thethering – My windows 7 laptop says limited access. When I look at ipconfig the IP address is the default window 169.254.xxx.xxx. I’m using unrevoked for the root access.

  3. saintsfan says:

do u get 4g or is it broken in the rom you are using?

  4. Safonne says:

Getting error when installing android app,it says “not able to install because not download from android market”I have rooted my phone.please help

    • Stephen says:

You just need to go into your settings from the home screen. Now go into applications and in there there is a check box which allows dowloads from non market sources. Check that and your golden. L8tr

  5. Enki says:

First of all I would like to say your site is awesome! I can’t wait to see it expand! You should have videos for a lot of cool homebrew products like emulators and such. Anyways, my question is will Sprint ever find out about this? Is this illegal? Bypassing 30 dollars a month is a big deal isn’t it?

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

I don’t think it’s illegal because Sprint is only making you pay $30/month extra to use “their” mobile hotspot, no one said you couldn’t use another app for that. 🙂 Besides, consumers shouldn’t have to pay TWICE for the same internet. I hope Sprint changes their policies on this like Verizon did offer free wifi tethering on their Palm Pres, I rather pay extra for my overall internet then pay extra.

      • You IDIOT, Verizon isn’t giving the access to the Mobile Hot-Spot to subscribers for FREE it is added into the rate plan somewhere, have you taken the plans from Sprint and Verizon side-by-side recently? Verizons plans clearly are far more expensive than Sprint. In-Fact for me to get the same plan I am currently using on my EVO on a family plan with 2 lines (the second line also being an EVO) with 1500 Shared Anytime minutes , Unlimited Data, nights and weekends starting at 7:00pm, Any Mobile Anytime Minutes, Unlimited Texts and Picture Messaging, All the e-mail accounts (whether personal or corporate) I can ever want to add, AND an additional $10 monthly charge per line for 4G Premium Data service and I pay only $169.99!!! if I wanted to pay for Mobile Hot-Spot (though I would NEVER pay for something like that on an Android device as long as I have access to Google.com) I would pay an additional $29.99 per line and STILL be paying less than I would pay with Verizon by $16.00 a month! Not to mention , if I wasn’t already a subscriber to Verizon wireless service, the initial deposit amount required is usually outrageous when Sprints average required deposit for consumers with fair credit ratings is $100.00 per line of service. Feel free to go to the websites and build the packages on your own! You will see that Sprint is the better deal no matter how you look at it! Do your research before saying things like that on a website and making yourself look like the IDIOT you are.

  7. alfredo says:

im having hte same issue as brian i get a pop up ( in app lication superuser permissions is not working…. if i could get some help plz… ty

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

Did you install the “rooted” ROM? You can’t just root the phone, u need to install the rooted rom also.

    • Stephen says:

Your phone may be rooted but without the rooted rom installed you aren’t NAND unlocked yet. You will be able to tell when you hboot, select recovery. If you get taken and can do a nandroid backup or restore your good. When you run each app the first time, it will have a ninja and the app will ask for superuser access. L8r

  8. Aaron says:

I’m getting a message “unable to start tether.” I did mess up on one step of the root which was to back up my data. It should have still been rooted though. This site is doing great. Maybe adding a problems/bugs forum on here would be nice?

  9. kevin says:

I cannot get my phone to root? I believe I followed instructions correctly?
Any other suggestions? I don’t have super user app.

  10. dfrias says:

Hey, thanks for putting this up, had a question, I am trying to run this on my Mac, ive rooted but when i put the phone in recovery mode my mac does not recognize it, ive followed all the steps up till this, can you help?

  11. Tony says:

Having same error as Aaron ” unable to starta tether” any idea what i need to do? thank again for the info for how to root

  12. James says:

Thanks for this… i went to the website and choose a different/newer tether. I think you should write an idiot proof guide to installing custom themes/widgets etc… because the XDA forum is somewhat complicated. I would and I am sure others would greatly apprecite that.

  13. Aaron Jones says:

i am getting the “unable to start tether”

  14. Joe says:

Thanks the tether works great, but when connect to 4G no. Data gets through? Any ideas. 3G data works fine.
I usedthe tether driver above the one you had in your video

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

Tether not working with 4G? Try downloading the latest wifi tether, also I am going to post a video real soon on another ROM that might fix the issue.

  15. Joe says:

Well the issue is that my phone is not working in 4G. Iam not sure if is becouse of the root or the tether program? has anyone else had this issue or know if 4G works after rooting alone?

    Thanks guys

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

Try the latest Eclair ROM, I will have details tomorrow on a new blog post, I’ve uploaded a video already:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLVl8xRBTgk

      Great ROM btw.

    • Stephen says:

I had the same problem and the cure was updating my radio+wimax versions. If your hand unlocked and get the 1.47.651.1 versions ut will start working again. I found a post that has two steps. You end up with amon ra recovery and fully hand unlocked, as well as it updating your phone to the same level as the june ota update.

  16. William says:

Now that I rooted my phone and got free wifi tethering it all works great EXCEPT for one MAJOR problem, my phone WON’T RING!!!!!!!!! Nothing I do seems to make it ring, ringer is full blast, I change ring tones and that don’t work, it won’t even vibrate…. .WTF????
    Anybody?

  17. Buddy says:

    the new tether works great
the only problem i’m having is that i also use a ARAVE unit which connects my cell phone to the internet for a better phone signal. when i tested the tether the signal on my phone went from 5 bars to 1. That is the signal strength that i get when i don’t use the ARAVE unit. It seems that the tether is killing the connection to my ARAVE unit. Do you have any thoughts on that?

  18. justin says:

Another thanks for the site & information. Using Masterblaster 2.0.5-pre2 on OMJ rom on the Evo. Internet works. Company SSL VPN works. Virtual network adapter for VPN works. Unfortunately, it seems that data does not work during a voice call. Researching that now… -j

  19. EvoRoy says:

Might be a dumb question but why do we download the Nexus One version instead of the HTC evo 4G?

  20. Anderson says:

Wait, I rooted da phone wit every exact same step u did on youtbe. So yur sayin I didn’t download da rooted ROM ? Beause my WiFi tether app doesnt work cuz da screen turns black nd says “su request” nd u have da superuser ting too

  21. tracy says:

Very nice! The wifi tether works great for me without encryption. When I enable the encryption I am only able to get a limited connection. It shows Unidentified network with no internet access. Any thoughts?

  22. tracy says:

I was using wireless_tether_2_0_2.apk in the above comments about unable to use encryption. I installed the newer wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre2.apk and it is working flawlessly with or without encryption. Bravo!

  23. 3.2 Quattro says:

Out of curiosity, what will happen if I try to install the tether app with an apk installer, without being rooted? Thanks.

  24. Murf3030 says:

I have successfully rooted my EVO. However, it seems like my ringer is not as loud as it used to be. I have it turned up all the way and still not very loud. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, any suggested fix?

    Thanks

  25. Pete says:

I downloaded the app, and it works fine…the only problem was I erased my EVO’s hardrive. How do I get it back? Thanks!

  26. Joseph says:

Every time i tap to tether on the wifi tether app it says “unable to start tether. please try again”. I don’t know what to do please help

  27. Los says:

Works like a charm. I have had me and girlfriend both logged in with about 6 windows open and still able to look at youtube and she was streaming Pandora

    Thanks so much ..

  28. Jack says:

I really want to root my phone to get this wifi but I have a concern, I read on here that you lose your data or stuff on your phone, to the people that have done the root what exactly do you lose on the phone??? Can I back up my data if that’s true?

    Thanks for the help….

    Jack

  29. Mathieu McBee says:

ok so i rooted my phone and not now only did it reset it to factory defaults and erase everything the tethering doesn’t work. now that ive spent hours reinstallIng everything and putting my e-mail acct back on i CANT GET ANY MAIL NONE OF MY ACCT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING. YOU GOT A FIX FOR THIS. No where do you say you have to install your custom rom as well to get it to work and you should let ppl know this up front that erases everything and that you need to install both.

    • HTC Evo 4G Hacks says:

Yes, you should install one of the custom ROMs, OMJ will fix all of ur issues I think.

      • JC says:

Hey so I updated my evo to the latest firmware that HTC pushed today in the morning/afternoon and I tethering stopped working do u have a fix for that?

  31. David Agrinsonis says:

Now You see what has happen? I am so glad I use PDA Net or Easy Tether. There are other ways to connect for free. I think you guys have VOIDED YOUR EVO SPRINT WARRANTY!!

  32. Pingback: HTC Evo 4G, Why it’s Awesome.

  33. Tyrone says:

Wow you guys are retards. This is why Sprint makes you pay 30/ m. It’s easier than running into problems while trying to hack your phone. Plus, 4g runs on a different network than 3g. So this app will prove invaluable once 4g rolls completely around. Can this app even tether a 4g connection?

    • Erin says:

No need for the name-calling. And if you were better informed, you would realize that as long as you take your time, do your homework & not skip over crucial instructions in haste, the benefits of using tested/verified hacks outweigh the willful ignorance & complacency of mainstream consumerism. It’s a matter of choosing your battles wisely.

  34. Ray says:

    Hey Max,

Thanks for the great info. Keep up the good work. I successfully rooted my phone. Wifi tether working and plenty of new icons.

But I now have concerns about losing my 4G access. What is the best method to completely reverse the process and operate with a non rooted OTA updated phone?

What do I need to do?

    Thanks – Ray

  38. RobbieB says:

If you root the phone and simply update to 2.2 wouldn’t you not even need the wifi tether app? Because on the android website it mentions that 2.2 allows any android phone to be a wifi hot spot…it’s in the prefectures of the OS

  39. When or will I be able to do this with OTA 2.2 Froyo? Anybody?
