How to Install Evo Zone ROM Gingerbread Android 2.3.3 on your HTC Evo 4G!

Recently, someone told me they installed the latest CyanogenMod 7 ROM for Evo 4G and wanted to install Sprint apps (like Sprint TV) back onto their phone.  Well, I tried it this morning and CM7 doesn’t support Sprint apps because Sprint apps use Sense UI and CM7 doesn’t have that.

Anyways, to make the story short, I found another great Gingerbread ROM, the Evo Zone ROM, which comes with Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread and Sprint apps loaded.  Now, some of you might not like the Sprint apps so I will have some instructions on how to remove some of the apps you don’t like also.

To install the ROM, you will need to do the usual, download the ROM zip file below:

Download Evo Zone ROM (or check here for the latest version at XDA Developers Forum)

Then power off you phone and get into the bootloader menu by pressing Power Button WHILE holding down the Volume Down button.

Wipe your phone back to factory, wipe Dalvik Cache, then install zip from SD card and choose the Evo Zone ROM zip file you copied over earlier.

You might have to Toggle signature verification like I did as shown in the screenshot below:

After successful installation, reboot your phone and enjoy the cool Evo Zone start-up animation screen:

I got like 35 MFLOPS on my Evo!  I was getting like 25 MFLOPS on the MikFroyo ROM and only like 15 MFLOPS on CM7.

Overall, I really love this ROM, I think it’s a keeper.  Everything works out of the box including 4G, camera, and also you can put GoogleTalk Video on it (since it’s Gingerbread).

I will have a video up soon on how to install GoogleTalk Video too.

UPDATE: After using for a day, I found out this ROM isn’t so great as you cannot change the screen brightness (until they fix the bug), which drains the battery like crazy. And Netflix doesn’t work. If you don’t mind those things, this is a fantastic ROM.

Interesting — I recently modded my Sprint EVO 4G with the latest Cyanogen 7 rom and then realized Sprint TV was missing. So I just found the SprintTV apk in the Backups folder on my SD card and installed it. I’m watching “The Patriot” on it right now. I don’t understand why you’d need the Sense UI to run this app.
