UPDATE: Gingerbread root is HERE!
So, you’ve unrooted your Evo 4G yesterday and installed the new official OTA Gingerbread? Well, I did and seems like the rooting method for Android 2.2 isn’t working on the Gingerbread.
But no worries, you can easily root your Evo 4G on Gingerbread by unrooting your Evo 4G (this will get you back to Android Froyo 2.2) then use the same rooting method on our site.
P.S. You can buy the rooting hormone on Amazon, roots any Android phone!

Just so there is no confusion on my behalf, I would just like to make sure I understand this correctly: I have the HTC Evo 4g that I purchased when it first hit the market a couple of years ago. I have never had it rooted. I also downloaded the OTA update last month to 2.3.3 (Android version)/ 4.24.651.1 (Build number).
So my understanding of this is that I will be unable to root my Evo 4g because I downloaded the OTA update? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Donell
@ Donell
As I understand it, that’s correct.
My phone is still running Android 2.2.1, while looking for a way to update, I came across some threads stating the above. No root for 2.3.3
Thanks Richy. Also, if I’m correct, I believe there IS a way for you to “root” your phone still. You’ll be able to find it in this forum for sure. I’ve already seen it, I believe in here a couple of times. On another note, I’ll be glad once they figure this stuff out for us poor souls that just stumbled into this secret society. I had no darn idea that my Evo could be “rooted.” Truth be told, I only want it “rooted” so that I can get the HDMI mirroring for my HBO Go & Netflix apps.
UNLESS… there’s a way to do THAT without the hassle of having to wait for a “root.”
is there a root for 2.3.5? hboot 2.18.0001
I just used the link below and it worked perfectly. It reverts to hboot 2.10 and thus makes it possible to use unrEVOked3 (www.unrevoked.com/recovery) to root your phone into Adroid 2.2 Froyo. Then OTA update to 2.3.5 or choose from a number of available custom roms. Two thumbs up!
mines saying the same thing. Have you found out anything to help
That is correct. No more root for you. None for me either
That may not be true. Someone is working on finding a root for GB 2.3.3 it may only be a matter of time before someone figures it out. in the mean time u can still use ur EVO. I just unchecked the auto update box so if there is another update I don’t get screwed again.
Is there any new updates on how we can root 2.3.3 yet?
:'(
my evo was rooted and couldnt get the ota update.. but, the people over at xda had a gingerbread 2.3 for root so Im still rooted even with 2.3..
Hello,
Currently using an HTC EVO 4G, I have NEVER rooted before and always updated..on the current 2.3.3 GB and I followed the methods on the video and I am getting an ERROR [140] Message. Please help
Same issue as Wolf. I got the 140 Error as well. Whats next?
We can’t root yet.. The update 2.3.3 came with a new hboot and no one has found an exploit to gain root access as of yet. This is what i get of it. But this would be my first time rooting my phone.
What I really don’t get is how HTC can possibly by law try to keep people from rooting there phones. Correct me if I’m wrong but Android is built off from the UNIX kernel and UNIX/Linux is an open source stating that anyone can mod, make, do whatever because it being an open source and free of cost..?
I reaaalllllyyyy want an exploit like NOW lol. Please 😀
how about the 2.3.5 2.18.0001? can you root it yet?
I had HTC EVO rooted but had problems & had to take it in to Sprint they fixed my phone but unrooted it &they put the 4.24.651.1 update on. When I go into my hboot, bootloader screen it says s-off but my phone is not rooted. I know that as of yet there is no root for the new update but does anyone know why mine says s-off? Is it possible for me to someway root. If anyone has any info or help I would appreciate it. For help or info my email is billy.j.ideological@gmail.com thank u
That means they didn’t completely unroot your phone, you can follow the directions here and root it again, lucky you!
hey i have the same problem with my evo 4g the error is (140 )please can you help me with this pliisss
Was rooted, then unrooted to accept gingerbread ota. Now have bootloader 2.16 but still have s-off. Can I flash custom rom?
Yes but you need to unroot back to 2.2 then root it as you probably lost Recovery during OTA.
i left a question yesterday but i dont see it anymore. it seems like you are a pro at this. would you mind helping me and my friend out. im trying to help him root but i dont know how to downgrade his phone back to 2.2. we did a factory reset and its still on 2.3. any help doing this will be greatly appreciated. im new to the root society and new to this site so i dont really understand what ruu and some of the terms are but if you dont mind helping i will be forever grateful. thanks in advance.
YES,
The easiest way to get back the custom recovery, since you’re still S-OFF, is to download and copy the PC36img.zip file to your SDcard from this page
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
Turn off fastboot under Setting/Applications.
Power the phone off. Then hold the volume down and power buttons simultaneously to get into the bootloader. Accept the update.
That will give you the custom recovery image that you need to obtain your root again.
Also,
If you want a quick way to reroot the phone without a custom ROM, go to
goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
download the image, copy it to your sdcard, and then flash the zip from sdcard from the RECOVERY MENU inside the bootloader.

Shortydoggg,
That worked great. Took about 5
minutes. Much appreciated!

has any figure out how to root gb2.3.3 yet i had to get a new evo and i realy want to root it
Nope, Hopefully soon though.
Soon though.
Wow I can’t believe how fucking stupid people are. Noone knows how to read before they post something. Everyone wants to downgrade and root, but if you fucking read, you’ll know YOU CAN’T!!!!!!! Once root is available, it’ll be all over xda and probably posted on phandroid or something. So stop fucking asking. I’m sick of the notification emails from this site with the rediculous questions and shit about rooting and downgrading. Everyone has the same errors while trying, there’s no help to give, so get over it and wait for root!!
your are a asshole
You are a fuk stick! Spending so much time in mom’s basement turn you into a dick?
we all are frustrated, i had to get a replacement evo and i have been screwed since. There are a lot of people that are new to this, and a lot that have jobs and responsabilities. Frankly im sorry that your life revolves around blogs and people asking dumb questions (atleast by your omission) ruin your day, well how about u get yo grown ass off the couch and find something constructive to do with your time u lazy BITCH! *THIS HAS BEEN A RSA BROUGHT TO YOU BY MR. COMBAT MEDIC*
@Richy …just flash a rooted gingerbread ROM
For those of you with an S-ON locked Evo 4G on 2.3.3, the good news is that HTC has released the kernel source so that might mean root may be coming very very soon.
Credits go to HTCEVOHACKS.COM E-mailing list.
Can’t Wait!!

I am a noob, for this i ask forgiveness. Ok I just bought an evo 4g, the store said that it comes stock with 2.2, but ever since i first had it all i see is 2.3.3. Do all evo 4g’s now come with it or is there an auto update when you first turn it on? and if it is an auto update, can i just exchange my phone for a new one and stop the update from happening? thank you for your patience and wisdom, ye of much androdial knowledge. Seriously tho, a response would be dope.
It’s a little bit of both. Some of the phones that were made, starting this year, have the update in them automatically. If you can come across an Evo 4G that was made last year, then it should be 2.2. But that won’t come from the Sprint stores, try online.
Well seems like I’m assed out. but thank you anyways for the speedy response.
Any luck on rooting 4.24.651.1 yet on the 4G?

@tdfell Nah man, and ass you can see its got some ppl around here just a wee bit tense.
and
@Danielk woah dude, maybe you should try a little decaf?
have you tried CyanogenMod. It is said that it can root gingerbread 2.3.3. and they have a ROM that does 4g, and HTMI. They also downloaded from google, the android wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk. Plus a few other apps.
I tried your way, but too many things went wrong. Would you try this one and let’s us know how it goes.
Where are you Zedomax?? They seem to finally have S-OFF now for the Evo 4g. Just found out around 4pm. Time to make another video.
our Evo 4G’s are finally rooted. Go here and root to your hearts content http://revolutionary.io/
Can someone please point me in the right direction for the VERY BEST ROM(s) and KERNEL(s) that will allow for HDMI mirroring? I’ve searched all over this site, but I can’t tell which ones are the best for my needs.
Best ROM is Cyanogen7 or Evo Deck, or any ROM based off CM7.
Damn that was fast. Thanks man. Just rooted my 4g last night. 1st time rooter.
Should I also flash a kernel for these ROMs?
Hello, I’ve been following this page for a while now. Today I downloaded the S-Off utility and it worked out great. Have S-Off now. Next problem – How to flash this thing?? I just got a new HTC EVO 4G (prior one was physically damaged and replaced by Sprint). When Froyo was the OS of the day I had easily rooted the phone with Unrevoked3. As I said earlier, the problem of the day now is that I have S-Off, Unrevoked3 is not allowing me root my phone. ANY help from you folks would be greatly appreciated.
Nevermind….. Figured it out.. Thanks anyway guys..
Revolutionary.io to root
• In step #5 we have to use the Revolutionary.exe from the download on the Revolution.io site. Not cancel the download. DON’T use the Revolutionary.exe from the unzipped file.
• In step 9 my device doesn’t have USB-MS Toggle, hence I rebooted the device and connected with usb in ‘Disk drive mode’ and compiled the file suggested, then changed the USB connection back to ‘Charger only’ , then rebooted device in recovery mode by holding down Power button and Volume down button then selecting Recovery
So is there a rooting solution for the 2.3.3 evo with then 2.15.00.05.02 baseband just got the evo it was a replacement. Please just a yes or no and if yes what file name..
Here, yes: https://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/root-for-htc-evo-4g-gingerbread-is-here/
Im trying to root my EVO 4g 2.3.3 but i get stuck when i get to the beta key part…and i can get my key # from my phone HELP:(
Hi
i was able to perform the steps to get to S-off but hten the revolutionary thing came up instead of the USB MS-toggle menu. I then just rebooted the device because i didnt know what else to do at that point from the revolutionary menu. Thing is the power button +volume downbutton together dont do anything to reboot the device or get into recovery. I turned off fast boot under applications thinking that might help but no. how do i get back to the recovery menu so i unzip the file specified in the instructions/video?
thanks

I would appreciate if you would give me feedback on anything i did wrong, or something else i should try. Thanks in Advance.
